I think I have a bad alternator (it's the only thing I havnt replaced yet) as my charge light stays on when I shut the truck off, and stays on all the time until it is started. So I first checked the alternator using my high tech wrench method (if the stator shaft is magnatized I assume it is charging) and pulled the positive cable off while it was running, and the alternator seems to charge. So then I noticed when I disconnect the regulator the light goes out when it is off. So I put a new regulator on it. But now the light is still on, and this morning the battery was dead. I again checked the alternator and it seems to be charging fine. The light goes out when it is running, and comes on when you turn the key off. For now I just put a new battery in it and I disconnect the cable when I shut it off. I will try to get the alternator in and tested when I can, but it seems fine, just the light stays on, and it seems there is a load on the battery as well. I saw some posts about this problem, but no solutions so far. HELP!

I had the same thing happen in my 79 this past summer.
I had to replace both the VR and the alternater, problem solved.
And,as several folks around here will tell you, getting the 50 amp alt. is the way to go. :D

So do I just tell Napa I want the 50 amp one? It's the only thing left I havn't replaced yet, so I think that is the culprit, Thanks!

Yeah,I think I shopped for mine online first, then went to Schuck's with a printout of the webpage, including price
But I'm sure Napa carried the same exact alt.Just a little more spendy.

Turned out to be the Alternator, put a new one on and viola no light! I got the fancy 40 amp model too.
