Mine broke, it looks like this has hapened before cause the weld busted. I plan on takin it out and re-welding it, the question I had was if any of ya'll designed some kind of stronger support frame for it, or anything. It seems like the stress from the mech. clutch is just way to much for that little 1/8" steel bracket, any pics of your designs would help.
thanks much :D It's held on right now by a super duty zip tie 8) ha

The problem with the clutch pedal breaking is not from it being light gauge metal as most people think.

Rule one did you notice that your clutch was getting harder to push.

I had to replace one in a truck that i got from Stormtrooper that was broke and it was already welded (not a very good job either)also the cable only had one strand left. So i inspected a lot more to see why as others have this problem.

It's not the pedal that is the problem it is the cable that is the problem. When i pulled my cable out i could barely make it work and that was when i had it straight not with two bends in it. With some time i worked the cable back and forth and using brake clean got the dirt and grime out of it then it worked freely again.

I have also figured out how to repair one if it is not welded up yet.

I also have a like new pedal assy. and a cable if sombody is desperate for one but the assy. wont be dirt cheep as i will reinforce it to make it stronger.

Pull you clutch cable out and clean it and your problem will stay away and the pedal will move allot easier.

I think for a lot of us, the problem has already developed, I know the '78 is downright scary. The weld to 'repair' the clutch pedal is scabbed in, and I pretty much expect the whole thing to fall off at any moment. On the '79 4x4 the previous owner did a really nice job with a 90 degree angle iron bracket. I don't have any decent photos, but this is what it looked like (more or less)...

You can see that this got mounted on the end of the clutch shaft to prevent movement...

Really simple, and it gave a very solid feel to the whole clutch/brake assembly. I think he cut the bushing down about 1/8" to allow the bracket to go over the end of the shaft. It had the stock clips on the end of the shaft.

I have a perfect one sitting on the shelf. I didn't know that they had a problem with it. Good to know!

I agree. If the peddle is feeling stiffer than usual, oil the cable. It helped mine out a lot.

I dont know how you blokes go but cables arent hard to get.

All the pickups/troopers and I-marks used the same cable.

I had mine break also in fact that's how I got the truck, the clutch peddle pivot point was bent and the guy that gave it to me didn't want to fool w/ it. Any way I found the spool piece where it goes through the fire wall was grooved so deep that it bound up. There by bending the clutch bracket. So roll it over 180 weld up the bracket, squirt some breaker loose down the cable and go for it.
