But seriously, are you talking about a stock motor? What do you mean by cheap?

well in theory it does.....allows more air flow into carb therfore a little more power.

i dont think there has ever been any dyno proven results on it tho

Pacesetter has a header that might help you squeeze a few more horses
There is also a few dual port intakes on e-bay you might want to check out
Try platinum spark plugs and high quality wires
K&N airfilters are always a good way to go too

im running the pace setter header and well it works vary well and gave me vary noticable power but it is expensive ($175 after frieght i think).
On the cover flipping, i have a buddy who does that whith his 87 GMC whith a 350 and while it dosnt give you noticable power it dows make the motor run smoother.

NOS stickers and Folger's can exhaust parts seems to help all the ricers around here.

You might concider cleaning out everything in your truck that isn't needed. You could be hauling around alot of extra weight that you dont want. Every little bit helps.

Seriously though, it depends on the definition of cheap. A good tune-up will help a lot, cap, rotor, points, condensor, plugs, and wires. It costs a lot less than things like a header or a weber carb, but if you're running old parts it can make a world of difference. A new air and fuel filter also help. (Anyone have a part number for a K&N replacement for the stock air filter? I keep meaning to measure and find out myself, but keep forgetting.)

Before you go buy a bunch of parts expecting it to be simple, keep in mind that the points need to be gapped correctly or the truck will run badly if at all. A copy of the Haynes LUV shop manual will help a lot for this kind of info if you don't have something already.

Once you have the whole thing back together and running, this is a good time to adjust the timing. Like MEPR said, running a little bit more advance on the timing seems to help. On my 4x4, at least 15 degrees is a must or it rattles and pings like maracas. It runs fine like that, so I never took the time to find out why, but my 2WD runs great dead on 12 or even lower. Experiment with it, and see what works for you.

pull the head mill it enough to clean it up do a mild port and polish job install header and better intake and carb. thats about all you can do thats farily cheap. i guess it all depends on what you call cheap too. see if someone can grind you a cam. i have heard of companies that can regrind your original to give you a bit more lift and duration. i don`t have any info on them though or the quality of it.

If you want to do it cheep, then just remove all the garbage they put on the stock engine.I just rebuilt my 80 stock engine and only kept what the engine needed to run. It seems to have almost twice the power as my street legal 79 stock engine with all the crap on it!! The only thing is ...you cant pass the emissions test if you remove all that. By the way i removed 112lbs.
