Got an '81 4X4 and the mechanic says he thinks the tank is about 1/2 full of crud, rust and crap. OR maybe some kind of intake tube (?) in the tanks has rusted through, sooooo we are getting one from a wrecking yard and have to replce the old one.

Does anyone know what has to be replaced, etc, and what to watch out for? We are hoping to to the repair on a weekend so it can be used for daughter to drive to school on Monday, so please let us know of any parts, or seals or hoses or whatever we may damage, or that we need to make sure we have on hand ahead of time when we do the job, as we won't be able to order anyting in, in time for job t be done by Monday.

Thanks for any help you can give us!

All new fuel hoses and hose clamps while your under there. New fuel filter(s). The filler neck hose might fall apart when you remove the tank. Good Luck.

Yeah, we got the new fuel filter already, but are replacement filler neck hoses even obtainable?

Hey there, I just replaced the tank on my 79' and 80' 4x4. very easy, it only took an hour maybe a little more. There really isn't anything on those years that looks like you have to worry about breaking. not sure on your style though.

Well, NONE of the parts stores here could supply me with a replacement filler neck hose, I was gonna replace it just in case....

Anyone who has replaced their gas tank, did the hose shred or tear when you did it?

I didn't have any problems with the filler neck on either truck. one has 108,000 miles and it looked just fine and not sure how long the other had been on but it had no problems either.

Just treat them with TLC when you take all of the hoses off and it should be fine.

While you are at it, you might want to trim off any old dried/cracked ends and replace the old wire type hose clamps with some good quality new ratchet type ones to make sure you don't end up with any leaks.
