My truck has been PERFECT ever since I rebuilt it.

It just had a little valve noise.

well i never bothered to fix it, because i didn't know if that was really the problem. it just sounded like there was a squeek, and i've heard from other luv owners that sometimes luv's are noisy. end of story.

today i drove out to my grandfathers funeral, just fine, no problems, and drove back home to drop off some money, i park in front of my house. turn it off. run in, come back out, because i have to head over to his burial now.

i make it not even halfway there, which thankfully is only about 1/2 mile or a little more from my house, and im cruising at about 15-20mph and i shift into 3rd, and my truck just kind of gave out.

made a horrible lurching noise, and when i gave it gas it would knock.

did my lifter go out.

its not a rod. because the noise is coming from where the valve is.

helpppppppp.

its my only form of transportation and i really dont feel like taking out a loan for a new car.

Need a bit more info on what year and motor.

Your going to have to lift the valve cover of and have a look around.

Bob.

squeak?? that could be several things... fan belt, water pump, or worse...could be a spun bearing. if it was spinning a bearing, the thing would spin it till it threw a rod. hence the motor not running. but if you're sure its in the top end, i dunno. ps-1.8's dont have lifters...the rockers run directly between the cam and valves... bad cam?

thats what i meant. not lifters lol.

but its a 79, with a rebuilt g180.

it ran fine for a while and yesterday just kind of gave out.

my dad said it might be a throwout bearing, but him being in indiana, and me in vancouver, and he can't hear what i can, im not too sure.

i took off the valve cover, i checked the clearences, and none of them were crazy or loose, i mean i have to use feelers today to check but nothing i could feel by hand. so that ruins my theory about one of them being too loose.

i dont really know what other kind of info to give.

is anyone in vancouver who would be willing to come take a look at it? lol

Its a bit hard without hearing it. Could be the timing chain and tensioner.

i checked the timing chain and tensioner. not in full detail, but i checked to make sure it wasn't loose, we had that happen before and completely forgot to extend that tensioner. lol

but it didn't really quit, it got loud as i shifted into 3rd, then lost power really. like i had to give it a lot of gas to get back home. and when i stopped at a stopsign, it died as i let the clutch out with a lot of gas, then ALMOST didn't make it up the hill when i had started it back up again. it was tough getting home and i was scared i threw a rod or something. but i dont think thats the case.

when i start it, and just let it idle after giving it gas to get up and going, it doesn't really make that racket. it kind of does, but not really.

my dad told me i should check the timing and see if im getting spark to each plug. i have yet to do that.

what does everyone else think?

maybe the timing skipped a tooth?Check the simple things first and work from there.

Yeah but if its spun a bearing and the rod is not flaoting about loose it still should run reasonable and just knock. It shouldnt be super low on power and having a hard time getting anywhere.

Spinning bearings is more a G200Z kind of thing.

Not saying im right of course, the problem is what it is.

Put a timing light on it then,
Plugs out and compression test. Start from there.

Bob.

just put the timing light on it.

checked the first plug its still in the same spot. in between the notches 4-6, i think is where it was running good.

2 and 3 weren't visible, and if i remember thats normal, and 4 is the same as 1. right?

but i dont have a compression tester. my dad had all that stuff and now hes over in indiana soo. lol i wish he would have left me some of the stuff.

could it be my transmission? theres kind of a racket coming from every freaking corner and nook and cranny from my truck, so i can't pinpoint it. but maybe something went out on it.

i just fired it up today, and for a few minutes it sounded good, so i put it in reverse and then it started doing that crap again. lol so i parked it, left it running and tried to find the source but still no luck.

to adjust the valves, what stroke do i have to be at. compression on 1 or something? i know i can just turn it till i get air out of the spark hole so i can get someone to turn it over for me. and does anyone know the clearances for a g180 head. i can't find my manuals right now, and the sticker that was under the hood is off an 80, and doesn't have it.

From what you just described it sounds like valves wont be your problem. Its a bit more terminal.
Let me see if i get this right.

On TDC No 1. You do the two valves on No 1 cyl. I think its Exh on 2 and In on 3.
Then turn the motor 360deg
On TDC No 4 you do the two vavles on No 4 and then In on 2 and Exh on 3.

Doesnt matter if you start from 4 or 1.

Pull the plugs out and you can turn the motor over by hand easy enough. If you have a careful look at the cam lobes you will see that whatever arms your adjusting will be off the lobe and somewhere on the base circle.

As far as the compression tester goes, you would be able to pick one up from an auto parts store for under $40 and you will have it forever. A screw in type one is worth paying a bit extra for as its easier to use more accurate and you can do the compression test by yourself.

You can get a compression tester from Auto Zone with a small refundable deposit. ie = free, if you return it.

yeah i just checked everything today.

my timing chain is good, the points in the dizzy are good, i tried changing the timing by rotating the dizzy, wasn't the problem. i mean from what i can see, nothing is physically wrong with it. from the topside anyway.

and i'm right off of 205. the mill plain exit, near the walmart on 104th ave. if you could help ctman. that would be awesome. lol bring your luv as well. i'd love to see it. :-p

eh this sucks.

Stick with it, you might be able to see the end of the world from there but your old truck is not quite there.
