I am wondering what is the best way to color sand the cowl and the rain channels above the doors and the area between them and the windshield gasket? Do you guys color sand every single edge of every groove in the cowl, or just the top edge, or not that area at all? I am a very patient person, but I don't even want to color sand every edge between those cowl spaces! Let me know any other good tips besides the normal stuff about color sanding. Thanks.

I use a red Scotchbrite pad for small areas. I don't know what type paint or what application you are using, so I would suggest you try it on a small out of the way area first. This is assuming you are going to biff the areas out by hand. You can get the red scotchbrite at most any automotive shop that also sells painting supplies.

the Scotchbrite will work but can leave deeper scratches the will be a little harder to get out, the best thing to do is use 1500 grit to 2500 grit depending on the amount of orange peal or contaminants in the paint… also before you start it is good to use the a clay bar to remove any larger foreign bodies on the paint so they don’t scratch it when you wet sand…and then use a 3 stage polish like McGuire’s makes you will want to use a cloth pad then a foam pad for final buffing

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I am not so sure I would want to use a Scotchbrite pad, that may leave too deep of scratches. I was starting with 1500 grit, then I want to go to 2000, but I think I need to start with 1000, then move up to the others. I know all the usual tips that I have read online about keeping the paper wet and add a little dish soap to the spray bottle. My main question is on how you guys go about color sanding the cowl where the wipers come through. All those little edges where the spaces are would be a real pain to wet sand, and the area around the windshield by the rain channels. Very small areas to get into, so was wondering what tricks you guys used. I am thinking about just doing the area on the cowl on the ends and edges and just leave the center area alone, but I am not sure how that will turn out? I most likely will be polishing by hand, but I do have a couple machines if I want to go that route. I am not super good with the machine, so I am afraid I might mess things up. I don't have the whole truck painted yet, so that is why I am asking questions now. I have just been practicing on the cowl and valance and the tail gate, so I can always repaint if I mess up.

well what tools do you have? there are lots of things that will work
4 my rain channel things i used a 3m sanding and rust removal disk from walmatr and it worked gr8 for my cowl with all the little slots i used a rotary saw with a small sanding disk oh for the rest of the boddy i started out with 400 gritt then 1000 the 2000 painted then 800 then 2500 and so on :D

The color of the scotchbrite is important. It is similar to the grit of sandpaper. Never use green. When I had my body shop back in the day with the basecoat/clearcoat paint, I scuffed the existing paint with the red pad if I was going to clear over the paint when blending in or color matching a panel. If I had to guess, I'd say it is equivalent to 1200 grit sandpaperfor the red pads. The green pads are about 400 or so, I believe. Clear was applied directly over the scuffed area after cleaning, with no other prep. Scatches didn't show through in the clear. However, that is why I said to test it on a small out of site area first, as I don't know what you are using. The claybar prep is good info, Ctmndu.

Yep, I have always used the red scotchbrites before paint on my paint jobs (I am actually painting a vehicle right now) and am getting ready to scotchbrite the cowl vents, gotta be careful as you can rub through somewhat easily with the scotchbrite too.
