Ok I just bought this truck last thursday. It was not running, it had set for over a year. So far I've replaced, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, ballast resistor, fuel pump, fuel filter and the fuel tank. Did all that last saturday. It ran like a brand new truck till yesterday. It was doin about 60mph on the highway no problems and then it started cutting out, like it was starving for fuel. Got in it this morning and ran like a champ. I work 60 miles from the house and normally ride in the company van but today i decided to drive. It drove great on the way up, but the trip home, well, not so great. Started cutting out and missing pretty bad. To the point that it wouldn't go over 40mph. finally about 5 miles from the house I got out and sped up the idel and limped it home. Now I'm stumped, doesn't appear to be any vac leaks. it's getting plenty of fuel. Idles rough, but it runs ok at low rpm. but get the rpm up and it starts runnin like crap. I'm out of ideas, any help will be greatly appriciated. :?

do these carbs have filters in them?

I would kind of think the lines may be bad, if its not a rubber line then the hard lines might be comming apart inside.

now it won't even start, well it'll start and run like crap (as long as I'm giving it as much gas as i can) for a few seconds then die. I haven't changed the regulator not sure it that would cause it or not. and not sure if the carb has a filter. lines all look great, but that might not mean a wholr lot

Look at the sight glass on the front of the carb. Fuel level should be half way up the window. This will tell if it is a fuel starvation problem external to the carb.

If this is the truck in your other post that had the old gas in it, I'd say it has trash in the carb from the old tank.

How might I go about flushing or cleaning the carb if there is junk in it from the old tank?

Pull the top of the air filter housing off, get a rag and have someone start the luv. Now with one hand work the accelerater link on the carb, rev the engine and then block the carb with the rag. Keep the rag in place till the engine almost stalls then take rag away, do this a few times. Doing this draws all the crap out of the carb. Ive tryed to explain this the best i could, it works everytime for me.

Maybe just take the float bowl cover off and clean out the bowl. Might have dirt floating around in there.
But I think it will be a fuel starvation problem, rather than ignition.

The carb might have a little screen in where the fuel lines hook up. Take the bolt off of the metal - 2 line thing and look inside of it. If no one took it out there is a screen in there.

well OzLuv I tried your idea which is the same thing a buddy of my said to do. It seemed to help but didn't fix it. I pulled the float bowl cover and cleaned it out and that didn't help it.

Ok twice today when I started it, it's ran great, prolly as good or better than it ever did, then I shut it off and start it up and it runs like crap. one of the times it ran good, i drove it about 3 miles and had no problems. I checked the sight glass on the bowl cover and the fuel is all the way up, full, when it should be half way. What does that mean?

If the level in the sight glass is too high it means the float is set too high, or more likely, there is dirt getting under the seat causing some leakage. This will overfill the bowl.
I usually pull the bowl cover with a white paper towel laying underneath to catch the fuel. Look for a rusty red color on the towel indicating rust. If you see this you probably have rust inside the gas tank.
This can be endless trouble unless you can pull the tank and flush it out good and repair it if necessary. Then replace any fuel filters, (stock fuel pump has one inside), and you should be fine.[/quote]

Could the float being to high cause the symptoms that i'm experiencing? When I pulled the bowl cover off the fuel looked good, there were no signs of rust. I just put than tank on there from my other truck and I never had a problem with it on that truck. for the most part I can normally handle fix a lot of stuff, but I'm lost on carbs. It's got a new Fuel pump(yesterday) and it's 3rd new fuel filter.

I will do the points again and I'll get the coil tested.

While you have it running, wiggle the key around.
It's wierd that it happens only sometimes.

Same exact thing was happening with my 79.
It was the voltage regulator.

ok so I replaced the points, and now it idles better. But give it any throttle and hold it and it runs like crap. It's still running great from time to time, so It can't be anything real serious.
