its getting really obnoxious not knowing my speed. i haven't been able to find the parts anywhere... i think its the gear thing in the tranny... ?

Probably not the gear in the transmission...check the speedo cable to see if the inner, braided steel cable is intact, thats what I've seen usually break.

Getting a new speedometer would be nearly impossible. Finding a used one intact in a junkyard somewhere is probably your best bet. That's probably your only hope for finding a speedometer cable or the drive gear in the tranny too.

But there is no guarantee that another drive gear will have the same gear ratio as yours and won't screw up your speedo and eventually cost you a speeding ticket, since there were quite a few different gear ratios in the Luv rear ends. The only way to tell is to count the splines/teeth on the gear to make sure.

Hopefully it's just a busted cable.

According to advance auto parts site you can buy a speedometer cable for at least a 78 chevy luv. You would have to check with them for other years and to make sure they still can get one.

I have a 1980 and bought a speedo cable at Napa a couple of years ago also if Advance doesn't pan out.
