My old 79 4x4 LUV used to creak to let me know it was time to grease the ball joints. It would creak worst when turning and hitting a bump (like entering a parking lot) In fact, my 86 Trooper does the same thing. In both cases the grease boots were torn and the joints really needed to be replaced, but greasing them makes the creaking go away for about 4-5 months depending on weather and how much dirt road you drive on.
If it is the first time in a while they have been greased, pump some extra through them, try to get new grease coming out of the boot instead of black nasty old grease.
