Hey, I have a little problem. My truck has been running perfect for about 6 months now. But yesterday it started missing once in a while, and not at any particular rpm. I do know that it doesnt do it at an idle, and it revs all the way up to 4000 without missing, it seems do only do it while it is in motion. It seems electrical because whenever it happens my tach drops to zero and then pops right back up. I already checked the idle solenoid, and even jumped it to a constant power source and it made no difference. The distributor, cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires are only six months old, and I just changed the fuel filter today.(Didn't help) Could it be the coil or the resistor? Any suggestions would be great!

i would at least take a look at your points, cap check plug gaps and all that jazz. check for vac leak, open up your elec connector caps between dist, and carb, the whitre clear things, and clean corrosion off the metal. could be a milllion things, start out w/ basics.

It is electrical. The clue is your tach dropping to zero means you are loosing your ignition. Unfortunetly it could be--connections in fuse box, connections to the ignition switch, from ignition switch to your coil, etc, etc. Maybe even a defective tach.
I would let it idle, then wiggle connections and wires to see if you can duplicate the problem.

A miss and the tach drops out? I'd check the fuel pump wiring, it's under the truck and subject to a lot of crap banging into it. It runs from the passenger side fenderwell under the crossmember; over behind the drivers seat on the gas tank side; ending, obviously, at the fuel pump. Sounds like it might be a short there. If you are still using the factory fuel pump relay, I'd check that too. Relays will sometimes stick or cut out when they get old/hot.

Also, check the wire tap you are using for the tach, it might be shorting out/loose/corroded.

What year is the truck? 2 or 4 by? Stock engine?

Good luck, let us know what you find.

I figured out the problem. One of the wires on the coil was really loose, I tightened it up and now it runs like a top again! Thanks for all the help.
