I had my bed off yesterday (which weighs a lot for 3 people, me on one side, my girlfriend and my mom on the other, it's a long bed too)... I was looking at my muffler which I already knew was pretty wasted. It has quite a few holes in it, and isn't in the best shape. I was thinking of replacing it, but what would you guys recommend? My truck is stock, exhaust and all (except for the tail pipe missing behind the muffler  ) so what would sound good, not too loud, and maybe help with performance a little (1/2 hp helps!!).

Would it hurt anything to just take the muffler off? or would that be too loud (may just try it since it would be that hard)? I would of course put it back on when it was time to smog it.

Thanks

Trust me...without the muffler it's very loud. Sounds like a Jap Zero on a straffing run.

I like your analogy ... I may try it out since it would only be like 2 minutes to put back on.. The catalytic converter and everything would still be on, so I'll just have to undo 2 bolts (I think)...

Hopefully the blackwidows under my truck will leave me alone... I killed one, the other is MIA but his web was rebuilt yesterday... Then there may be a couple up by the front end...
Oh and the wasps that decided it was a good idea to make nests on my truck... one was stinging my shirt yesterday, but I think I've killed all of them.

Also, anyone know the size? Length, inlet/outlet sizes, etc?

Well I took it off today and it sounded pretty good. It wasn't that loud at all... The only problem was it making a popping noise when I let off the gas...

I was thinking a glasspack muffler, but would that help with the popping? What would be best to get rid of that, but still keep the sound?

Thanks

The poping could be a whole other thing but I do recomend a glass pack that is what I have on mine but if you get one get the thrush you can never go wrong with those!! Also I redid my whole muffler piping and all and used 2in to get the job done looks and sounds good I also changed the manifold to a preformance one there is a little diffrence in hp but not enough to scrap the original and do what I did.

According to my exhaust guy, a glass pack will actually last a bit longer than a standard steel muffler. The 4x4 has one of those oval turbo style mufflers on it (which needs replaced) but the '78 has this monstrous 2' long, 8" diameter can style. Looks like a Smittys, but I'm guessing it's stock. Really quiet out back, but the engine noise at speed sort of negates the effect....hahahah...

you said you were wondering what the popping is, its the air pump. it pumps fresh air into the exhaust to make it pass smog. i took mine off and threw it as hard as i could, i think it landed in the neighbors back yard , you can take it off, but make sure to plug up all the lines.

Well I still need to pass smog, and it's really bad in my area. We have to do the dyno smog test and everything.

Your air pump will cause this, but it should not if everything is connected and working ok.
The air pump has on it a thing called a diverter/dump valve. When you let up on the throttle it opens this valve and dumps the air into a hose to the air cleaner instead of the manifold pipes. This stops the popping.
It senses high engine vacuum while coasting to operate this dump valve.
It does this by the small vacuun hose connected to the valve. So make sure this line is connected to a vacuum source on the intake manifold and has a strong vacuum on it.
