Well I have had my truck for about 3 years now (will be 3 on the 30th!!), and didn't do anything to it until about a year ago. I lowered it, probably about 3" up front and 4" in back (just a guess. lol) and I'm getting ready to take it to a show, not because I will win, but because the money is going toward American Cancer Society. I want it to look decent though when I take it, so here are my plans.

I am going to paint it flat black, and put white scallops on the side (probably behind the front and rear wheel wells)... I am also going to paint the wheels black, with a white lip to match the truck. I am going to use rattle cans, unless you guys know of a better way? I'm open to ideas. Then I'm going to fill the emblem holes on the fenders, and maybe the side markers if I have time.

I'm also going to put a new seat cover on the truck, and I'm looking for a carpet kit... anyone know where I can get one for not too much? I am also looking for some other things to make it look better... I saw some chrome side mirrors on LUVRestoration.com, but they aren't in business anymore. Anyone know of stuff like that I can put on my truck?

I put a CD player in under the dash, on the little rack on the passenger side, and the wires are just kind of loose back there so I'm going to clean those up, and put my 6x9's back in (took them out so my friend could try them). Where would be the best place to put the speakers? I just had them on the ground and seat before... They wont fit behind the seat, so they will probably just stay on the ground...

Also where could I get door seals? Mine are getting pretty hard and starting to crack...

Thanks for the help, and I will update this thread with pictures when I start doing work on it, which wont be until next weekend because I'm going to a motorcycle race this weekend.

Sorry this was so long... lol

Also I broke my left rear light, so if anyone has one for sale with the chrome strip, let me know! Thanks!

Maybe I can cut a little bit off my speakers, to make them fit... I dont think it was much that needed to be taken of for them to fit...

Image

Here is a rough drawing of what I want the paint to look like... What do you guys think of the wheels? I was going to paint them all black, except for the actually rim, which I was going to paint white... It may be too much white though...

Or I should get these for $80 Image, which end up looking something like this - Image

If you use the caps and paint the rim edge white, it will 'simulate' the look of a Wide White Wall. At least that was the idea the major manufacturers tried to sell after WWII. I'm diggin' the paint scheme too. You might consider painting the rim edge red and then using the caps also? I like it, I may end up doing something very similar with mine and leaving it a 'rat rod'...or a swiss cheese rod, or whatever the correct term is for a rusty flat black, beater...

You might also consider leaving the wheels black and white as you've done in the photo and using chrome center caps with a spinner bolted on. It would add a little splash of chrome, if that's the look you're after.

I don't know what your paint looks like now, but how about keeping the truck the original yellow and adding the scallops in a 50's style seafoam green, then painting the wheels to match? Studebaker/Rambler/Chevy all had a sort of pale green that would work. There is even a Rustoleum color that might work (Grass Green 7731).

Paint: Rattle cans suck. Take a look at the thread here on '$50 paint job'. You'll be much happier with it if you roll it, and when it comes time to redo it, you'll have much less prep work. If you want to leave it flat, just use Rustoleum primer, and don't rub it out when you're done.

Door seals: Get some off a Dodge D-50, and cut them to fit at the bottom (you'll need to take out about a foot. Use a small piece of tubing to join the pieces.)

Mirrors: If you are going to paint it flat black, you might consider some 'peep' mirrors that mount on the top of the door. There are some pretty cool designs on ebay, I like the iron cross. The mirrors on the photoshopped truck actually look ok to me with the flat paint, but it's your truck...

I'm going to pick up the truck today (my friend keeps it out on his property) but I have to go get a battery because the old one is dead... lol

If I were to do the roll on paint, how would I get the bed (behind the hooks, and up in that area) and I also want to paint the interior (what would I do?)... I think it may be a little wierd with black on the outside, then opening it up to YELLOW. lol

Will the Rustoleum flake off easily (like inside the cab, if I put my arm on the door, will my arm be black)? I'm not going to start paint for a little while, since I have to sand everything down first, and fix some other stuff.

Thanks!

I'll take pictures as I work on it, and I'll be sure to get some before shots and post them up

Another thing...
If I were to use the primer, about how many coats would I need? Also, would I have to wedsand it, since it's not going to have a shine, and the orange peel wont be as noticable?

I'm headed out now to go fix my parking brake (it isn't doing much right now), than im going to put my speakers back in, and try to find a place to put them, and hopefuly start sanding. :D

The paint won't flake off if it has something to hang on to. Scuff it up & you'll be fine. Green scotchbrite maybe? You probly don't have to get so careful with prepping & wetsanding the primer on a flat black job but use high enuff grit sandpaper so you don't have sanding scratches showing thru. Hard to access areas will be easy with a rattle spray can of rustoleum. I'd think spray would be the way to go on the interior but it would be a bit harder requiring doorcard removal & masking. Primer? not real sure what to tell you but I'd think apply & sand (with a misted on different color guide coat) and repeat until satisfied.

Here is a condensed rundown - http://carpainting.wetpaint.com/

well after a LOT of sanding we got part of the driver bedside done... I also mounted my F-250 horn, tightened my parking brake, took off my visors and took them apart (I'm going to fix them, and rewrap them), pulled out the tail light, and got my speakers hooked up again.

Anyone know how well paint peeler will work? I didn't get around to the bed above the body line (except for the top rail) and I know that is going to be a pain in the #$%. So me and my friend were thinking about paint peeler for that area, and the larger areas such as the hood and roof. Would these be a good idea?

I also need a driver side tail light! Anyone have one for sale? I need the whole thing, since someone hit the truck and broke the housing...

Here are some before pictures:

Some pictures of the sanding. We uncovered some bondo, which seemed to be in pretty good shap except for a couple areas:

And what it ended with:

The reason we only did part of it is we ran out of time and it has to sit outside until the next time I work on it, and I didn't want it to rust. We decided to go with the spray can route because we thought it would be easier, and also becuase of having to do sections at a time.

My girlfriend lives up there right now, well she is moving down to Lincoln today lol.

It's nice up here, and there are a few LUVs around. I think there are 2 or 3 others in Auburn. Does your Dad have a LUV? I've seen a couple up in Grass Valley, just wondering if one was his

No he doesn't. But My white one originated down here in LA, then the previous owners moved up in that area. When the eng. seized they put it on E Bay and I got it and brought it back down here. :D

If you go through the member list , I think there is at least one other guy from Auburn on the site. Check G.V., and Nevada City also.

Well the truck is coming along... we have outside of the bed done, and the tail gate. Now I need to paint the inside of it.

The cab is almost done being sanded, I think it will be done Thursday. Hopefully I can get most of the cab painted Friday.

We plan on taking the bed off Saturday (wish me luck, I've already killed 1 black widow, and maybe another, but he may have gotten away in my rocker) and hoping to get the back of the cab and the bed sanded/painted that day.

I am going to be picking up a fender from budbondo on the 16th, on my way back to town on a trip, so I will have the get that sanded and painted.

I don't think I will have enough time to get the inside painted by the 23rd, but I will get it after. I was thinking of painted the inside white, so it matched the white scallops. What do you guys think about that? I'm not sure how it would turn out, but I think it would be cool.

I will take some more pictures when we take off the bed, and get the cab painted... I'm excited to get this done, and finally see the finished product!

Why Cat, can't you just use a gun to shoot primer over it all and go ahead and then paint it?

I've been working my butt off trying to get this thing done by Sunday. My girlfriend suprised me by painting the interior while I was in Southern California...

Here are some pictures of the outside... It's not completely done yet, but getting close!! I just need to paint the inside of the bed, paint the wheels, and throw a few more coats on and sand it with 800 grit to smooth it out a little. And then put it back together! (the white isn't going on by Sunday, that is after)

Pictures! (took them with my phone so not that great, I'll get better ones when I'm finished)
