Has anyone here ever replaced the front cv boots on their luv. If so what procedure did you use, the hayne's manual seems to go way to in depth just to replace the boots, any suggestions would be appreciated

To replace the boots you have to take things apart down to the axle shafts so it is an in depth job. You can get kits that use split boots that can be put on without tearing everything apart, but split boots basically start out leaking as bad or worse than the torn ones you are replacing. Then they get worse from there. Also, if your boots are already torn, you really need to clean and regrease the CVs anyway since they will be packed with mud and crud.

Sorry I don't have better news for ya, but my tips would be stay away from split boots and prepare for a big project. This is one of those snowball projects too, since it is all torn apart you might as well do brakes, repack wheel bearings with grease, ball joints could stand to get replaced, etc etc.

What I'm getting at is the haynes manual describes dropping the whole front differential to removed the axles, can't the boots be replaced by removing the 4 wheel drive components and removing the upper and lower ball joints and steering knuckle then replacing the boots versus dropping the whole front differential.

Though I've never replaced these from a LUV, I have done both sides of a Subaru GL10 with FrWD. Was easier to disconnect from the xfer case side and with a small scissor jack "push" the engine and tranny away to alow the shaft to drop free. Was alot easier than the manual I had at the time described the "correct way" to do it. All was well after, put another 150k+ miles on that thing.

Well, upon further review, the LUV cv's are close, but no cigar. The Subaru were held onto the case spline with a long pin pushed through the center of the cup.

Was hoping they were similar, as one of mine needs replacing too.
