 Post subject: door hinge slop
PostPosted: Wed Apr 21, 2004 7:40 pm
Does anyone know how to fix slop in the door hinges? My 80 4x4 drivers door is sagging and have never heard of how to fix the bushings or pins that are in there. I guess that the junkyard might be my next stop.

RATNLUV drilled his and put pins in them.
He found some kind of chrystler pins or something....maybe he will chime in.
you may want to do a search and see if you can find the thread about it.

slick97477,
what kind of pins do you put in there and how much larger did you have to make the hinges?

do you just want a new set of hinges???
I'm pulling apart a 75 and shipping parts to people,I don't think they weight that much.

have you tryed to reajust it, unscrew the little pannel behind the kick pannel and you have access to the hinge, loosen the bolts and get some1 to lift up the door while you tighen em again, i did this on mine and problem solved, 15 min job

If your local autoparts store has a bunch of different sized pins and bushings sitting on the rack like mine here does then just take one of your hinges in and look for the closest match in pins and bushings. I haven't done it yet but no reason there shouldn't be something close to the size us LUV guys need.

I personally took my hinge and took it in and bought the closest size that matches and enlarge them just a bit so the pins fitted and put it back together and then had no slop so thats a idea

3 year old thread but wanted to say that you don't need a hinge pin, we drilled out the hinges, put in a stainless bolt and a stainless washer up and down and is perfect! Also will never need to be replaced. :D

Bagged, did you put a bushing in the hole for the bolt to ride on?

I would say any decent machine shop should be able to sell you a steel pin and brass bushings if you just take the hinge appart and get the specs of the holes and what not...

i think the slop comes form two places. once the stock plastic busings wear out.

first place is up and down slop that I fixed by putting in a brass washer

second place is in the diameter of the pin to the diameter of the hinge. I shimmed this with a piece of K&S brass tube that I found at ace hardware.

The hard part is getting the stock hinge pin out. one side has splines on it and the other side is a clearance fit. push it out to the spline side. I think on top. so the splines don't drag through the entire hinge. good luck
