New bolts next to old bolts & extractor/New gasket on front seal retainer & a new throwout bearing

I got the broken bolt out, and got three new ones to replace the ones that are stretched out. In this picture you see those new bolts, the broken one, the new extractor I used, and one of the stretched out bolts. Hey Rondog, you're cool. I know there's a lot of different people looking at this site, and it's good when we can all lift each other up and use this site for helping out each other.

I ran a tap in all four holes and cleaned them out. I'm going to finish it today. I will add a photo to this post later to show the finished point.

I did it. The bolts were torqued down to 14 ft/lbs and it worked great. Gs11x is right to suggest I should have cleaned the bolt holes out first. I didn't have a bottoming tap, but I had a tap, and I did the best I could, and each bolt tightened right up. Notice the stretched out bolt at the top of the first photo. Three of the bolts were over-tightened in the past, and that's why I had the trouble today. I put some fresh grease on the shift fork ball and put the fork in. Then the release bearing assembly got fresh grease and I tightened up the two springs that hold the assembly to the fork. Now the input shaft has the clutch splines all greased and it's waiting for an engine!!!!!

Who said, "Yabba Dabba Do!!!"?

Wow John it's been a while yet you have kept yourself busy as can be. Today has been the 1st time I have been near a computer in a while. Looks like everything is finally coming around. You are really putting together a beautiful piece of machinery I hope I get the chance to "rap" with ya soon.

Yes Catman, I hope so. I still need one of those half-moon seals on the head, the one on the front. It's a little thinner than the one on the rear.

Anybody got one?

I left mine at the machine shop, and it got discarded.

If you mean the 2 for the valve cover, I got one for each end you can have.

Thanks, 79-LUV'r, I put out a few queries, and now I got rubber plugs coming from all angles!!! I even asked the machine shop to look in the trash for it, and they found it! So now it's a matter of getting there, or even ordering the part, which Gs11x gave me the link for!!! I will see...

True,

heck, for that matter you can get the whole set from Fram. Think it's only 9-10 bux.

I had to take the engine off the stand to install the rear main seal today. It went back on the stand to install the oil pickup tube and the oil pan. I also did some touch up. I can't find my oil dipstick! I also need a semi-circular plug on the valve cover in the front. I still need to install the flywheel, and the clutch. It's getting closer to start up time!

Up with the hoist!/Rear main oil seal over the crankshaft

Changed the alternator color! (Cleaned the commutators too)/Right side

Hey John, beautifull work on that engine! Thought I would share a tip with you and others that deal with broken bolts. The process we used in our shop was to drill the piece out with a drill with left handed drill bits. As the name says, they turn to the left.
We had a whole set of them. As you are drilling with these many times the friction from the drill bit would catch the broken piece and spin it right out on it's own threads! This worked great many many times.
Can't wait to see yours running.

I found the oil dipstick!!! Whew! Looked all over and finally there it is. Did a tiny bit of painting, and will show you when I add it on tomorrow. Might be ready to install it in the LUV in a day or two.

I also ordered and received a new valve cover set, so I have the rubber half-moon plugs for the top of the head.

Hey Rick,

I won't rush to put the engine in. I have some things to do before I install the engine, and I'm going to take my sweet old time. I have gone so far very carefully, why hurry now? The detailing, and special touches make it all better.

I need to flush out the heater core, and I plan to do that with a hose, while covering up the bell housing. I need to decide where I want to route the tubing for my oil pressure gauge and drill the hole. That's something I would like to do before installing the engine. I also want to reinstall the cross member, the midlink, and the splash plate before installing the engine. I bought the engine hoist so that I didn't need to rush. I also have a lot of unique photo ops while the engine is out. I have taken over 2000 photos of this LUV project since September, and a lot of appreciation has been expressed. Why should I hurry and later wish I'd taken this photo or that one?

Frankly, I'm puzzled by the comments you're making about my physique, and I wish you'd cut the comedy out or put it in another thread. My person is not your property and not your right to post disparaging remarks about. I may not be as young or as pretty, or as smart as you are, but I can get a few things done. Whether I do it to your liking or not is irrelevant. I got some major parts from you and I would like to think well of you, not have to remember you as a discouragement.

It's not going anywhere/A lot easier to install the oil pan with the engine turned over in an engine stand!!!
