Get your hands on a hand-held vacuum pump, check the spec's for your distributor, and then take the cap off, take out the rotor, remove the metal cover (if it's still there - and if not - get one) and pump up the vaccuum pump to see first if your distributor is moving (advancing), and second to see if the little rubber diaphram in the vacuum advance is shot and leaking like hell, or the arm connected to it is rusted stuck.
That could give you a huge vacuum leak, really lower your mileage and performance, and can easily be fixed by replacing the vacuum advance. Most parts store still stock them and it's pretty common for the older japanese vehicles to have them go bad.
Also check to see if your distributor weights are moving freely, the springs are good, and everything else is OK, while you've got the cap already off.
If you're gonna drive it...it's all there in the manual...so you gotta buy it, read it, properly diagnose what's wrong, and fix it all to keep your truck running smooth.
