Hey all, question...

Let me preface this by saying that I know I can take the front cover off and count the pinion teeth to get the ratio, but I'd rather not crack it open if I don't have to. Plus, I wouldn't be able to do that for a week or two and I want to be able to take it back to the yard asap if it's not correct.

A buddy of mine made a video showing the rotation of the drive shaft yolk as he spins the hub. We clamped the opposite hub so only one would spin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rTozE5H-k8

He rotated the hub 10 times and as you can see the toothbrush only rotated 17.

17:10 -> 1.7:1 -> :econfused:

We followed the youtube video of the guy with the '73 Duster with the slicks and when he did it it came out perfectly at 4.89:1, what did we do wrong? The pup only came with the 3.73 and the 3.42, correct?

If you double 1.7 it equals 3.4, so did we do something procedurely wrong?

Help.

The trick here is when you clamp one side to stop rotation the differential action causes the remaining wheel to turn twice as fast. So yes you multiply by two. As your wheel probably turned 17 times and just a fraction more (difficult to see with the naked eye) you have a 3:42 ratio. Such as 17.1 X2=3:42.

pups where sold with

3.42 diesel MPG+ models there a 4 speed, unless it was sold in CA state then its a 5 speed.
though some short bed 2WD gasers have it to with a 4 speed.
3.42s where ONLY sold in 2WD pups

3.73 the rest of the 2WD diesels all with 5 speed.
3.73s where ONLY sold in 2WD pups

4.11 all 4X4s and 2WD auto transes (there was no 4WD auto), and most gasers
ALL 4X4s are 4 speed tell 86/87years then in 88 they sold the MUA as a 4X4 88 up to its last year, the MSG is 2WD ONLY.

86/95 the 5th gear in the MSG is beefed up, the diesels are hard on the 81/85 2WD transes.
mostly from people running hard in 5th, at to low of RPMs

and the 4.55s from a 84/87 trooper can bolt in a 10 bolt rear from a 81/87 pup.
