I have a stock 79 fleetside. The heater for the cab, does not get hot. I did a little looking and can't see anything obvious wrong, got any ideas? Or is this charictoristic?

Just on the outside of the firewall there is a cable-actuated valve - make sure that the cable is securely affixed to the lever, and that the valve is not stuck shut. It's right next to the brake master cyl. against the firewall, have someone sit in the cab and work the heat lever while you watch for it.

also make sure you have your radiator full, I ran into this problem before, and I topped it off and it started heating. feel your lines going to the heater core and see if they are hot, and the thermostat could be stuck. if it's not the valve, the heater core could be stopped up, that's usually easy to fix, take off both lines on the engine block and get a garned hose and flush it.

Yep looked at the level bought a new cap, checked the valve on the firewall, seems to be working, don't know if the internals are good shape. I guess I'll try a flush. I flushed my old Jeep last year and had two freeze plugs start leaking. Thanks for the info.

Like Dave mentions - let the engine warm up and then feel the lines at that valve - it should get warm there if there's coolant flowing. If not, either that valve is stuck, or the heater core is plugged.

You shouldn't need to flush the whole system to clear the core, though.

Good luck!

sounds like one of your heater hoses or the core is plugged up. The way the lionkages work on these guys is perty much so if it moves the valves are working too...

the only thing else, I can suggest is, if you can get your hand up inside the heater box and try to feel the heater core, I could do it on 2 of my trucks, not all are easy to do though. they say that the radiator sealant dosen't clog, I think they are full of it, have you ever used, stop leak.
thats why I had to flush my heater core.
