:x thats my dash.....any ideas on the way i should go on it
i was thinking about going to a junkyard and getting a decent dash and taking mine out.
But i was wondering if one of those dash caps would cover ummm the bareness on top.
(sorry don't really get this BBcode stuff so links r the next best thing)

I don't have any experience applying a dash cap but I know the repair job that FullaLuv did turned out very nice. That's the route I'll go when I eventually get to that point. FullaLuv had posted the details of his purchase at one point. Search the archives or beg him to post again.

Good luck,
Eric Q.

With the dash cap you still need the stock dash for it to fit over. You will need a new dash or one from a junk yard. I have never seen a dash pulled from a LUV worth re-installing. A new dash is spendy, around 6-700 bucks. I went with a new one and I think the only other one is Ctmandu.

I did the dash cap which was ordered from JCWhitney for about $95. I had a cracked ugly dash before. After it is a thing of beauty. I have to tell you though, it took some doing. The cracked dash had curled in some places, especially under the windshield seal. I had to trim this curl away, but saved the pieces to support other areas under the cap. The cap is a piece of thick plastic. A shell. If you tried to use it without a form or substance underneath it, it would probably crack like an M&M without chocolate.

Now having said that, the choice is up to you. The options are varied, as are the costs. The dash that Ctmandu is doing costs almost $700 and is imported from Australia. If you can afford it, that would be the way do go. I haven't seen the end result of Ctmandu's dash, as I think he's waiting for warmer weather to install it. I believe it has the padding and form. You might find substitutes in fabrication, like styrofoam or putty, but I can't speak from experience on those. If I was in your situation, that's what I might try. Even some parts of the dash would give you the ability to use the cap, but you would still need the bottom.

Just an FYI for you, the dashes are glued in, if you do happen to find one that is remotely useable, it is not going to come out in one piece. I replaced mine back in the early 90's and it came out in about 30 pieces as it was so brittle back then. They are just vinyl covered foam.

I know this is 79RatLuv's post, but I need some help deciding what to do with my dash. My dash is good except for one big gash on the passenger side above the dash compartment. Anybody know which route I should take with it? :?

It will not get better. I went with a new dash and love it. My thoughts were why put money in the paint and interior and "try" to patch the dash.

Rat should note here that this would be an appropriate use for the dash cap. Since your dash is intact with some imperfections, the base would be there for a cap. This would be an M&M worth munching on, so try to get a photo and let us all see what you have here. I'm betting Rat would be interested too.

We need to see the photo before we give a definitive go-ahead. The bottom half of the dash has to be already there.

And if anyone finds a dash to use a dash cap on remember best time to pull is in the summer, a little more flexible-- and start at the bottom and use a putty knife to start taking it off go slow most time the glue is dried up and will come off with not to many problems. The problem is pulling it off evenly without twisting or bending that’s where you will get more cracks or brakeage. have done a few this way and works good... if top is really bad use duck tape to hold the top together while you take it off the dash frame this will help it from flopping around as you pull it

On my old 78 I was going to completely fiberglass the whole top covering all the holes and make it smooth it out with filler and just repaint it with semi gloss paint. Lots of sanding and mess but would be a cheaper fix but not original. My truck now has a newer dash cap but is curling. Not sure what I am gonaa do to it. The bottom part is great.

Looking at the new dash before I installed it I thought to myself that the dash will out live me. Like I said it was spendy but with all of the other mods to the truck it was worth it. I have painted mine, new small block and trans, back halved with a nine inch, new rims and tires, all new interior, so the 600 (the price a year ago) was not too bad to take.

And think when they first started to make the new dashes we could have had them for $365 and that included chipping... And we all thought that was high 2 years ago
