making that seat fit right was hardest things I have done on a car.
but now my $350 luv has and $85 seat. At least the materials were $85. Probably could have done it for under $50 with a single color.

Yea nice job on the seat. I can't seem to hand sew a button on my Dickies shorts right. It keeps coming loose again.
Maybe I should diet.

Well alot of us state "I did the restoration by myself", but now looking at you doing your own seat I guess I can't say that. Nice job.

Lookee what I found!!! Gawrsh!!!! Hey, yeah!!! A restoration in the works. An '80? Wow it had worse floorpans than mine. Nice weld job. Especially interesting upholstery job. I can't do that, but I'd like to say that your seat looks just like mine, except mine came with a cover.

You must be trained in upholstery, or a female. I can't sew to save my life. I'd probably drive the needle through my hand and become part of the seat. Maybe you should open a business. I liked your newly upholstered seat!

Glad to see the photos, and I hope they keep coming Gs11x.

Hi fullaluv, yup it's an 80. the floor pans were gone on both sides. Only thing I can figure is that the water got in and sat for a very long time to rust that bad. It is the hazard of being a car in WA state. when I bought it the seller was proud that he had a piece of ply wood cut to size that sat over the holes with some plastic tarps folded up acting as gaskets. I should have taken some pictures of that. it makes me want to start a thread call "Fixes Gone Wild" or "101 Ways NOT to fix you Luv"
thanks all for the compliments, everyone. I was hoping to inspire others to save their rusty trucks instead of parting them out.

Congrats again. Nice work.

Where did you pick up the used industrial sewing machine? Is that part of the $85? ;-)

I would like to try upholstery but need a sewing machine. Are you done with that one now? I would be interested in buying.

Yeah, "Fixes Gone Wild", good idea!!

The rust happens. If the heater core leaks, your floorpans get the coolant water, which already carries rust. I noticed that problem on mine. After all the work on the floor, now I have to stop a leaking heater unit. This in the dead of the winter and outdoors. I wish I had a great place like yours to work on the LUV.

I noticed a thread awhile back on the heater core problem. I'll have to search it out. It's frozen outside, so I'm not doing anything for a few days.

It seems to happen all too easily as we work on these LUVs that even when we have the camera, we get too concentrated on the work to stop and photograph. Or we're too dirty to handle the camera. I know though, that all of us enjoy a well-done clear photo properly posted to enlarge and view.

One question has plaqued me though. Are we all to shy to be seen? Just the one guy, with the tongue sticking out, ew. Where are all the faces? Well right, we ought to keep our nose pointed at the LUV. But what if I saw you at the store, I wouldn't know you unless I saw you leave the parking lot in your LUV.

Way to go, Dan.

Hi Eric,
found the sewing machine on the craigs list for $80.
Vinyl materials were $85 only because i did 3 colors
Hog ring pliers $10 at harbor freight.

If you have a home sewing machine I would try that first. Believe it or not most home machines can do it also. The biggest thing you need to be successful is make sure your needle, thread size need to be matched for your material thickness. Here is the link that helped me figure that part out.
http://www.gwsms.com/didyouknow.htm

My big leanings form the upholstery projet were.
1. Get correct needle size and thread size for material thickness
2. Cloth fabric would have been easier that Vinyl for first project
3. Don't make it to big, measurements need to be exact and you want the fabric to compress the foam some so you don't have wrinkles
4.doing you fitting with you cover inside out will help you get the fit correct.

Sorry I think I am going to hang onto my sewing machine still have some more projects to do. Door panels and carpet next. if you don't want to do the sewing part I also saw many companies out there that will sell you a seat cover kit. I saw prices from $200-$300. Then all you have to do is remove the old and put on a new cover if your foam is still good.

let me know if you have more question.......It was a fun project

I can't get my pic on here yet cuz my computer is on the blink and I forgot my photobucket password. Duh!

I'll post my mug later.

I put my sunvisors in today, then rushed in to warm up my hands on my wife's neck!

Nice photo of you, Gs11x. We should have a thread called "Faces of LUV". I'll start it later when I get my computer working if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

I'm not going to try to ruin the show; it's going good Gs11x!! I did go along with Roadshow, and there were a lot of photos that aren't there. I did see Ben and his Pa and Sis. I saw Drummerforhire, ew! I saw Luvsadrag, Bones_75_99, and Luv4me. If I saw any others I didn't mention I wouldn't mind seeing 'em again. At any rate, the most recent photo had to have been over three years old, and by now even Drummerforhire might have gone bald. So let's do it again.

Unless you've been on "America's Most Wanted" recently, or grown breasts like Drummerforhire, then don't be bashful!!

Take over now, Gs11x!!

Hey GS11x, thanks for the info and good links. I read up on the needle/thread relationship. Seems simple enough but not obvious unless you were aware of how they work together. Thanks again for the link.

I broke out an older sewing machine that my mother had and played with it a bit. I will take your advice and see what types of material it will handle before purchasing an industrial model.

Thanks again,
Eric Q.

I got an old sewing machine too come to think of it. No way. I shudder to think of it. If I did try anything with it it won't be until spring or summer.

I have a deaf friend named Archie who lives near Yakima, Washington that has been doing upholstery for 35 years. He told me he'd do my seat for $120 labor, materials extra. Maybe Gs11x would settle for a chicken dinner.

LOL
