My other '79 4x4 that I plan on using for firewood is acting up. We thought maybe the gas tank got moisture in it. We emptied it, put new fuel filters on it (twice now) and it still sputters and just wants to die and has an occasional backfire when stepping on the gas without even moving. It seems to idle ok with a little less sputter. I was reading on the boards about a fuel pump relay that could cause some trouble? Also I read somewhere here about a filter inside the fuel pump? I never heard of that before. Just wondering what else I can check to get this truck running right. How do I go about making sure the points are ok and what other simple checks should I try to help figure out the trouble? Thanks for any info.

I had a similar problem some time ago, thought it was relays, but it was actually a shorted wire. The original wires to the electric fuel pump had been smashed between the cab and the frame - ran new wires and all was well (switched to mechanical fuel pump later)

Also, there is a tiny filter in the carb input fitting, where the gas first comes into the carb, its got the screw with the bracket over the nut in most cases, take the bracket off and undo that bolt, and it should slide up and off.
