Finally got all the parts together for my '78 and dropped in the 5 speed but Im not sure what kind of oil it takes. When I drove it for the first time with the 5 speed I used gear oil. It was I think 80w90w or somthin like that and it was smooth and shifted real well. I did some searching about what kind of oil it takes and saw that it takes SAE 30 so I swaped it out right away. Now when I drive it feels rough and it shifts harder. So does anybody know what kind of oil the MAU5 takes?

MUA-5 takes 90w I believe (thats what I've put in mine since we got it and it's running just fine with 225,000+ miles on it)

I thought the MUA was the same as the MSG. Just 30 or 40 weight oil. Could be wrong.

The reason for using the lighter oil is that with the heavy gear the syncros drag and make shifting hard.

That is what I thought as well. I've run 90W in an MSG for quite a while though with no ill effects. I think unless you are in a very cold climate 90W would be fine. The only real difference I noticed was a little stiffer shifting on the 90W, but it was quieter running.

I had to get the driveshaft shortened about 2 inches and I re used the slip yoke from the auto. Even the trans mount lined up using the autos crossmember mount. So the MAU5 is about 2 inches longer then the auto. I dont have a MSG so I couldn't tell ya the difference.....sorry :(

For the oil I think Im going to go with the 90w.

Thanks for your help everybody!

All the Isuzu trannies i have seen recomend 30wieght. That said my Troopper and my Luv both have 80w90 in the tranny. The lighter oil is realy just for trying to eek out some more economy through less oil resistance...

Cant say i agree 100%.

Ive had 90w in my box, had to drain it, near impossible to shift gear till things got real hot.

In the noisy box i shandied it up half and half filled near to the top, got a bit more life out of it.

 Try going to your local motorcycle shop and get some Bel Ray motorcycle trans 80-90 oil and put it in.It is classed 80-90 but is lighter and a whole lot slicker and it works. I have it in my t-10 in my truck and have used it many time in t-5s as wall as in a couple of VW trans. Its just a thought but you will like the slick shifting and the durability.

Well last night I was looking around at my dads shop and found a few barrels of synthetic SAE50 trans fluid for the semi's. I took a gallon home with me and put it in the '78 and it is alot better now. The weight of the oil is right in between so I'm happy with it now. Thanks for your help guys! 8)
