My clutch works but it is really stiff or hard to push in.

1. Does this mean that I need a new one?

2. Or can I just adjust it somehow without removing the tranny
and engine?

3. About how much would it cost for a mechanic to install a new clutch?

thanks

My 80 4x4 is the same way. It was ok until i changed the engine. I didn't change the clutch from dead engine and I guess I should have. There is a pedal free play adjustment where cable comes through the firewall. this is the only adjustment. I am really looking forward to pulling engine again but it has to be something with the pressure plate.
Maybe someone else has been through this.

If your clutch pedal is hard to push in, then the cable may be in need of lubrication. If this is the case and you don't lubricate it, you may end up having a broken or cracked clutch bracket above the steering column. This bracket is what the clutch and brake pedals hang and swivel from. It's just a stamped sheet metal affair that cannot take long term strain. A lot of guys here have had to repair it.

The only down side to the cable vs the older hydraulic clutch setup is that flimsy bracket the pedal pivots on. If the clutch gets stiff that bracket doesn't last long. I have redone the hydro clutch system (both slave and master cylinders) on my 77 five times but I never had an issue with my 79s with the cable, at least not since I rewelded the bracket.

Just wanted to point out, a hard to push in does not mean there is anything wrong with the clutch disc/pressure plate in 99.9% of cases. Concentrate on getting the cable lubed and it should help a lot. If you lube from the top and bottom several times over a few days of driving and it should trickle down into the cable. The return spring down by the transmission might be the wrong one too, a lighter spring down there could help.

Just keep asking questions, 800 has ALL of the answers and does not mind helping out. Some of us get to answer if we beat 800 to the question, but rest assured 800 is 99.999999% right.
