Anyone have tips on electric choke adjustment? My Luv isn't starting cold like I want, and I'm going to have a look at it today. The Haynes #319 manual has directions, which I haven't tried yet, but I thought they were a little strange. I thought I'd throw this in to see if somebody knows something relevant about this.

I thought about converting to a manual choke. Any kit recomendations?

Yes, it's an Hitachi DCP 340. It has an electric choke, and when I turned the choke housing it seemed a long way to go before I saw the marker. Lined up, the choke plate was closed and didn't open. I had to turn it back some before the choke plate opened. I haven't tried starting it yet today. The floorpan restoration has had me twiddling my thumbs, but it's done now. However, I want to wait to put the bench seat back in after the floor liner goes in. It won't be here until Monday...

Maybe I'll go give the key a twist and see what happens. Back in a few minutes.

A majority of electric chokes on carbs can be adjusted similarly. Peek under the round black phenolic cover and ensure that the flat coil spring is hooked over the linkage that connects to the choke butterfly. That done, line the index line on the black cover up with the line on the housing. If the engine is cold, the butterfly should partially closed, depending upon the actual temperature. If the ouside temperature is near freezing, the butterfly will be nearly closed competely. This closed position should leave approximately a 1/16th inch gap between the edge of the butterfly and the wall of the throat. This gap can be adjusted by rotating the black cover slowly then tightening the three clamping screws that hold the black cover in place.

I'll try it, though it sounds like the Haynes manual. You're probably right.

Thanks...

I tried starting a few minutes ago, but it only ran a few seconds.

I'll try the adjustment when I get off the videophone with my friend.

I got it! I think the problem before was I tried adjusting the choke when the engine was fully warmed up, and it was EASY when the engine was cold. I had it start right up and idle just fine. Whew! Just think, I almost went for a carb rebuild, but I decided to try it first!!!

This Luv is all stock, even the hubcaps.

If I find out how to add photos, I'll put some on here. I've taken over 450 photos of my progress with this sweet Luv, and they are all uploaded to Kodak Easyshare Gallery. I would love to share them with y'all, but it takes learning how to use this forum first, so it hasn't happened yet. I enjoy seeing all the photos of everyone's Luvs.

The carb hasn't cost anything yet except a new accelerator pump boot, $3 plus $1 postage. I think I put the accelerator pump spring in backwards though because the acceleration is hesitant. Other things haven't been so low cost. The head resurfacing was $181, the POR-15 was $154, and the dash cap was about $100. I'v probably spent another $500 on all the rest. I got a replacement head from a wrecking yard in NE Oregon, B&K, and although they said it was good it was not, and that was $120. I ended up having the original head resurfaced which was in good condition despite all the water that had gone through the engine.

I need to fix this truck though. It's not just for fun, it's going to be our wheels. My other ride has a broken down high speed in the automatic transmission, and I don't feel like working on it. The Luv is much more fun, and I will get it going!!!!

Did you get your so very expensive import installed just right, Troy? After all that dough, I hope it's perfect. You said you were going to get to it after the home show, but I haven't seen any more mentions of it.

I'm waiting for my black liner from RockAuto; scheduled to be here Monday. Then I'm ready for some pics. I'll send you some.

As for the carb, I almost did order the Weber. I thought it would be worth a try first, and it is running. I have yet to take it out on the open road, though.

:)

Yeah!!!!!!! I did it, just like all y'all!!! Here's my Luv, lookin' good. It's not on the ramps now. You can see the stock wheels, which I painted. It's hard to see the dash, but at this point, it was still cracked.

To further the quest: Any one know where to get a new fuel tank filler hose? I have a leak to fix. I'm planning to take it to Schuck's and match up a hose later.

Thanks Luvrv8, for the photo tip. All it took was a little nudge and it all worked out. I learned how to copy the Img and paste it into the message body! Now we can really communicate! I hope you like the photos I post.

My electric choke is no good. The heating element fell out, and I think I need another choke unit. Any one out there got an electric choke you would part with? Maybe some one who went to a Weber??? My LUV is a '78, and the carb is a DCP340.

QUESTION: Will the electric choke unit off a '75 fit on a '78 Hitachi carburetor?
