I have a 1980 Luv. A couple of times it has ran right, but most all of the time I have to continously pump the gas to keep it running. It has a new fuel filter, and all new vacuum hoses. The alternator is working fine. This is all I know. Can you tell me what could be wrong?

Vac leak or out of adjustment choke. I've fought both at the same time before. If you can get it to idle, spray carb cleaner or something (WD40 works) around the base of the carb, intake, and vac hoses and listen for a change in RPM.

Yep, the carb cleaner will help you narrow it down. I had a vac leak, used the carb cleaner to localize it somewhere at the back of the carb.

It dawned on me that using the spray was like using a shotgun. Puts out a lot of vapor that can be sucked in anywhere.

I then sprayed some q-tips with carb cleaner to "wipe/dab" along the edges where the carb meets the manifold, throttle shaft openings, etc. No change in rpm.

The other big opportunity for an air sucker is where the manifold meets the head. Sure enough, localized a leak on number three intake port. That's why I got an initial change in RPM when I used the spray at the back of the carb....part of the spray was getting sucked in at the head.
Good luck.

Now I have checked all the vacuum lines, cleaned the carb, and put new points, condenser, rotor, and distributor cap. It ran good for about three blocks and then started doing the same thing again. I had to constantly pump the gas to get it back home. Any more ideas?

Had the same trouble with my 80 model. I had to change the fuel relay and it works great now

Sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem...check your fuel pump relay like he said, then check your fuel pump, fuel filter, and lines. If it has been sitting for a long time, you will have a bunch of rust and sediment together with some real rotten old gas in the tank that will cause you lots of grief if it gets into your fuel system and the carb.

I usually remove the tank and clean it out and reseal the inside, then blow out all of the fuel lines, and replace both the fuel filter next to the pump back by the tank, and clean the little screen inside the fitting going into the fuel inlet at the carb on anything that has been left sitting for too long.

Then I lube up all of the carb/choke linkage/cables real well with WD40 or something similar.

If that doesn't solve it...you have 3 choices - rebuild the carb, replace the carb, or my personal favorite - find a weber and an adapter plate.

You can find rebuild kits, rebuilt carbs, or used webers and their rebuild kits (or new webers if you want to spend more money) on ebay pretty easily...just do a search in their regular auction, or in the companies that have ebay stores.

I hope this has been helpful for you....good luck!
