My 80 LUV with a/c (not working at the moment) has been running hotter than I think it should lately. I took off the 7 blade thermal clutch fan and put on a 4 blade solid fan that I had here. My son will tell me Monday night after work how it does on the freeway now.

My question is, how do I diagnose or test the clutch fan to see if it's bad? Either on or off the truck.

My luv does fine. But when I run the a\c it will run hot at idle. I put on a idle stop solenoid to bump up the idle when the a\c is on. It helps a little so I,m going to try a electric fan and a 160 thermostat.

I never had too much trouble with mine when i had my 7 blade with a sold mount on, killed my gas milage a bit and hurt the power some put that was all, since i put the electric fan on I've been running hotter than i really want to, going to rewire the fan some, if need be I'll be going back to the 7 blade but i'll get a new fan clutch.

When my 80 LUV w/AV was overheating, it turned out to be a partially plugged radiator core. I had the radiator rebuilt with three layer core instead of the stock two. Cured the problem to this day. Never overheats even in near 100 degrees and idling in traffic With the AC on.

i didn't know luvs came with clutch fans... mine just has a 4 blade solid plastic thingy. i've been thinkin about a flex fan though. as for the clutch fan i think it goes by temp in wich case u should be able to spin it freely by hand when cold and not when it's hot. that may be a way for u to test it. good luck i hope that helped ya

If memory serves, if a/c was fitted the motor got a viscous fan instead of the fixed job.


It works on heat, when the hub heats up it gets tight and the fan spins at engine RPM instead of dragging.
