On my 80 2WD, Can I get in there to change the clutch and flywheel by pulling back the 4 speed? What I am asking is, will the trans pull back far enough to get up in there and do the work?

Will it be easier to pull the eng out instead? (I hope not).

im not sure if youll have enough room by just pullin the tranny back. you can pull the tranny from the motor though, and completely drop it out. youll have tons of room then.

that's what i did with mine. drop the tranny on the ground... but i had some problems with clearance so i had to take the little mounting piece completely off between the crossmember and the tranny. not just off of one or the other. then it comes right down.

ps. mark your wires!!! theres a 3rd gear switch wire. i messed up and hooked mine up to the reverse lights so when i hit 3rd they came on!! oops 8O :D

OK thanks. I thought I couldn't get the trans out because of the non removable cross member. :?

The 2WD tranny doesn't have near the space issues you find with a 4WD. With the 2WD, you should be able to pull it right out from under the truck without much hassle.

Dont forget to change the pilot bearing. It will piss you off that a 15.00 part goes bad and you have to pull everything apart again.

Yep, good point. Get the whole kit. disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. The kits usually come with an alignment tool too, which makes the project so much easier.

Thanks for the help.
The pilot bearing was new 3000 miles ago when I put in the new eng. The clutch had a chatter as if it was oily, but it's dry. I think the guy messed up when he turned the flywheel, and it has a warp in it.
So I am taking out the flywheel and clutch ( which appeared to be very new when I bought the truck) and toss them aside, installing the clutch and flywheel out of the knocking eng. that was in my blue78.

I got it apart yesterday and going back together today.
I did learn one important thing. I find it much easier to pull the eng. for this job than to pull the trans out from underneath. It will really suck going back up, without gravity on my side.

That's when a tranny jack really comes in handy...I got mine from the local Harbor Freight store cheap.

Got it all back together and it works great. :P
I think the flywheel was warped. I don't think I could have put it on and torqued it down and had it cock eyed on there, so I think it was turned improperly.
Anyway, I also got the exhaust put back on the manifold straight so now there's no leak. It's been a good day on my end.
