If your at #1 tdc, just make one revolution of the crank back to tdc. Your now at #4 tdc.

They are refering to tdc compression stroke. When #1 is at tdc, so is #4. But #4 is at tdc of it's exhaust stroke, so the valves are not closed all the way. So you make one revolution of the crank, and now #4 is at tdc compression and #1 is at tdc exhaust.

The easy way to tell is when #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke the rockers for both valves on #1 will be a little slack. Unless your valves are adjusted too tight you should be able to wiggle the rockers back and forth a bit.

Or you could cheat and stuff a long piece of the appropriate sized rubber tubing in the #1 or #4 plug hole, (depending on which one you are trying to determine is at TDC), then put your finger over the end and tap the starter untill you feel air pressure coming out of the other end of the tubing...then remove the tubing and shine a small flashlight in the plug hole while you turn the engine over by hand with the fan and it's belt untill you get that piston at TDC...if all else fails.

I have a nifty little set up that includes a brass whistle that is screwed into the threaded lower half of an old spark plug that an old machinist friend of mine made up for me (as his way of thanking me for helping him fix his truck a few years ago)...you just screw it all into whatever plug hole you need and turn the engine over untill you hear it whistle to tell you when you are on the compression stroke (instead of the exhaust stroke) and go from there.

It comes in pretty darn handy sometimes....basically it is just a whistle that screws into an old spark plug that has the porcelain and tip hollowed out and removed, and the center threaded to match the threads on the end of a very loud brass whistle he got from somewhere (or made).

I told the old guy he should get a patent on the darn thing and sell them...because everytime someone is around when I use it...they either try to swipe it or buy it from me...and if that won't work...they bug me to death about where to get one....lol
