If the engine backfires out the carb, then an intake valve is open. This can happen if the timing chain slips a tooth.

Yes it could be. But it also could be other things that aren't that major that you should check out first.

Ignition timing off and plug wires mis-plugged at the cap can cause the same thing. It's really easy to do that on a V-8 engine. Backfiring thru the carb usually means the timing is too far advanced so the piston doesn't reach TDC. The combustion forces the motor to momentarily run backwards. The intake valve just has to open slightly to cause the backfire.
