ok i can't find the spec in this stupid hanes manual. it says "use a feeler gauge to adjust the clearance." duh what size feeler gauge? i need to get a chilton! anybody have the spec for the clearance? it would really help. oh and if anyone has the part # for a chilton that would be great.

thanks again.

From the Haynes manual:
Inlet--0.004 at low temp Exhaust--0.006 at low temp
Other words, adjust them cold.
Put the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the cam.

I haven't done this yet. Will do it this weekend. Valvetrain clattering like a diesel.

Also, check out the popular auction site on the web. That's where I got the Haynes manual. None of the local shops had any. If they did, they would cost about $17.00. I got one in great shape for $11.00, including shipping. They have a Clymer on now for about $5.00, and what looks to be an official handy dandy shop manual for $39.00.

Good thing I got it. The dipstick who owned the truck before me had all kinds of vacuum hoses in the wrong spot. AARGH.

thanks alot. the spec is what i really needed. where in the hanes did you find that because i looked for about an hour and didn't find anything. i found the whole section where it tells the procedure on how to do it but it never said the spec.

page 37, section 45. Before you go crazy, make sure your book is the same as mine. It says "319" on it.

My books have always said:

.006 for the intake
.010 for the exhaust

I just did my engine yesterday.

Mine is a 1979 1.8.

DK, what size/year is yours?

Could that be the difference?

Mine is a 79 (Series 9)

I just checked the series 9 shop manual and the valves are supposed to be 0.006" intake and 0.010" exhaust.

O.K., good info. I'm gonna adjust mine this weekend. Think I'll start with the spec's you gave. Thanks.
