Well, I got another engine in the Black one (the one on the left here as my avatar) and she ran fine for a week until the oil pressure sensor started shooting oil out of it.

I replaced the head gasket and the oil pressure sensor and started her up and then was going to take her to work the next day and she would start.

She would spit, sputter, run rough, then die all billowing black smoke.

Here is what I have done in the last two weeks:

I have taken the carb off and cleaned it really good bottom up. I have taken the needle out to make sure it wasn't damaged and she is OK. I have adjusted the needle, throttle, and the thingamagic there that they use for fast idle (high cam), and I have tuned the thing on TDC. I have made sure everything is OK, re-done the vacuum lines from front to back and nothing. Still spits and sputters.

When she croaks she throws gas up on the windshield and backfires through the carb every once and a while.

I am braindead. I went through Haynes, Clymers, and the other book of blessed LUV and can't get her to run. I want my LUV back.

So if anyone can give me some Idears, I would appreciate it!

I dont know anything about stock luv motors or carbs but did you do something to the carb float to get it out of adjustment?

Sounds a lot like the truck I bought with the camshaft gear on 180 degrees out. Try swapping the plug wires at the disti, #1 for #4 and #2 for #3. I'm sort of ignoring the fact that it ran once, but the symptoms sound very close, including the spitting gas. I managed to get mine to belch fire out the carb, it was pretty spectacular.

If nothing else, it is something to check, could be someone played plug wire roullet with ya as a prank or something. Point gap also comes mind as something to check. That can produce somewhat similar results.

On the float. No, I made sure that it was not stuck and the return jet wasn't clogged. Put it all back together and whammo.

I will check the distributor and do what you say 800XL, I took the valve cover gasket off and found that the timing chain was loose, so it may have slipped a gear. I did put it at TDC before my best frend dropped a wrench down the timing chain hole.

Still pissed about that.

It was close to that 800XL, you would never guess that the timing chain tensioner was locked so it never tensioned up the stupid gear.

20 minutes and I am driving it daily again. Until the next screw falls off.

Did you get it fixed? I may have an idea, I had a similar problem with my 80. There was a small shim plate missing in my carb and the card would fill up with fuel before I started it. When I started the truck, I blew out black smoke for awhile, until the carb ate up all the extra fuel. The shim allowed the venturies to move around allow fuel to escaped in to the Carb. I'm not sure why this happened or worked this was, but when I rebuilt the carb, I replaced the shim, and now I get about 28 to 32 miles to the gallon. Go figure?

Yeah, it was the timing. I am working on getting a Weber for her. I am hating hitachi's.

When the engine backfires out the carb, it's timing. The intake valve has to be open when the plug fires.
