Post subject: turbo v6 in luv
PostPosted: Sun Feb 16, 2003 9:20 pm
Hi guys.I'm new on here and I have a 78 luv 2wd.I also own a highly modded 86 Grand National.I have alot of spare parts and am going to build a 4.1 with the stock 86 headers, turbo, and fuel injection.I was wondering if this has been done before.I think it will be neat my 3600# GN runs in the 11s with a 3.8,so 10s in a luv should be easy.Anyone know if a engine mount kit exists to put the 3.8/4.1(same thing)Buick in the luv?I can fab my own but it would save time if one is available.

and about an instalation kit i have no idea the truck was given to me with the motor allready installed.

Well I have an extra turbo 3.8 block, crank ,rods and heads.I also have the required turbo and headers for it.As well as the 86 factory intake and injectors and extra computer. But I keep those as extras for the car normaly.I'm going to put some 8to 1 comp. pistons with that crank and rods in this 4.1 block I have and use my extra parts to turn it into a fuel injected tubo 6.I think it will fit the luv great. If you want to pick up the necessary parts to turbo your 6 you should try the parts for sale section of turbobuick.com.The power of a turbo 6 is awesome. The one in my GN puts out over 500ft/lb of torque! And all the parts are basically reworked stock ones. The intake and heads are ported and I have a te63 turbo with a mild comp cam and 50lb injectors with a custom intercooler, not much really as far as trick parts.

Hey cool i'll check that site. my engine is a 1978 so its way older than yours, and its carburated and it has the stock 2 barrel rochester carb on it, and everything is stock, i've replaced a few things on it just to keep it running and now i am trying to go for performance, My luv is a 75 and it has a turbo 250 trans. and a 9' ford rear end its really low geard i dont know the gear ratio on it though, it was given to me when i was a little kid now i'm 16 and got my truck and a little 1981 celica with the 22R and a 5 speed trans. it hauls ass!i've raced it a few times but i dont have my licence yet so i try to stay of the street as muc as I can but sometimes these guys with all these with little imports wont race on the dirt strip that i use so I have to go on the highway to race them. and I allways win. that 22r Toyota motor is the best 4 cyclinder that i've ever seen its incredibly fast and it even could beat v-6s. i am also hoping to get a turbo for that.. but do you know if I could put the turbo on my truck even though its older and carburated? if you could help me out with this I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Josh

I believe the heads still have the same port spacing and bolt pattern. So essentially you could add the headers from a turbo car with a turbo and intercooler and just use a K&N carb hat like some of the mustang guys do on carbed cars.A stock turbo could be bought for about $150 used and headers for about $100 and a stock intercooler for $100.Then the carb hat would be about $100.You would have to use a boost sensing regulator so that fuel pressure will rise 1 to 1 with the boost. You would need to go to smaller gearing like a 3.08 or something like that.My GN has 3.42 and I use 2" taller rear street slicks to keep from spinning so much.I will warn you though,a blow through setup could be hard to tune. There is a forum on turbobuick.com for thr early carbed turbo 6 cars.I'm sure those guys could steer you in the right direction.

Where could i get these parts at? and what is a carb hat?.. i've looked around on turbobuick.com and i didn't see anything on the older carbed engines, but i will look again. yeah but if you could let me know where i could get all those part for that cheap that would be great.
thanks.. oh yeah um i dont know the exact ratio on my ford 9" but i know that its really low. so i'm thinking maybe 4.56 or maybe 4.11. but i know that it is really low.
thanks

He's a link to Hooker Headers. They make a mount kit for the Buick 3.8 / 4.1 engine. If you want, i can send you a drawing of the mounts. You can decide if you want to fab a set of your own. Send me an e-mail and i'll reply with the drawings. I dont know if your mounts would differ with it being a later model truck. You can look at both and decide on how you want to go about it...John
