Hey,
I just got my new 80 Luv to run after sitting since 96. :o Well at least till the gas I squirted down the carb lasted. First problem is the ignition switch. It won't turn the starter in the start position. But it will turn when you have the switch to on and push the clutch in. Only problem is every time you go to change gears with the clutch the starter wil go. I know, not good . Maybe wires are mixed up on the switch. The other problem has got to be in the carb. I hooked a temp gas tank on it so it doesn't suck bad old gas. It does start and run a few seconds and conks out. I guess the idle jet is clogged. Any sugestions  on what to do? I will be parting this 80 4X4 LUV out if anyone needs anything. Many good parts. I just want to get it running to be able to move it around the yard.

It sounds like the starter relay is always getting power and the clutch pedal is completing the circuit. I would start by reviewing the wire diagram on the site and check to make sure the ignition switch is not stuck in the start position.

The truck is in east centeral PA in Pottsville. The bed is in pretty decent shape. There is a aluminum cap on it which kept it nice inside. I can send you a pic if you send me an email. tdoorly@yahoo.com

I think I found the problem with the switch some wires were in the wrong place on the switch. Now it works by turning it to start and pushing in the clutch. Is that how its supposed to work. Still having the problem with keeping it running. Could it be the resister on the coil that make it conk out after starting? I still think it is not getting gas, but gas is in the bowl.
Help,
Tom

Ok I got the switch problem fixed. Now I can only get the LUV to run for a few seconds after priming the carb with a shot of gas. Maybe I should say that the truck has been sitting since 96 and I didn't want to suck the old gas out of the tank. So I am using a temporary tank and gravity feeding it to the bolw inlet. The pump doesn't seem to be working anyway. Does the carb need gas pressure to run or should it run if the bolw is full? I guess I'm gonna have to pull the carb and clean all the jets and passages out to get it to run. Any suggestions?
