Oh, I didn't know they served a purpose. Vents? Hmmm. I'll take a look.

I drove the LUV around town a little today. Bought a three-day permit and then drove around some feeling justified. Only thing is I didn't fill it out!!! I'm going to fill it out for the next three days though. I tried to fill the tank, but the filler hose is leakin' like a race horse, so I stopped after $5. I hope I get a hose soon cuz I want to start calling in for inspection.

Gs11x, I'm hoping to get a used one soon. Nice photos of your LUV though.
My shop is a lot smaller than yours.

Hey FullaLuv I Have Your Pics and Your Parts Cleaned Up. The Hinge Had The Door Stop And Spring Like You Need. The Filler Neck Is Fine. But Now That I Have The Pics My Comp Is Acting Up and Not Reading The Camera. Took Me Only A Couple of Hours To Fix It Last Time. I Bought The Camera Back In 97-98 It May Be Time To Get A New One....lol I'll E-mail You The Pics ASAP We'll That Is If My Computer Allows Me. Either Way I'll Send Them Off In The Morning. Again Sorry For The Delay.

Glad To Hear Your Road Test Went Okay.

Alright BlackLuv. I taped up the fuel hose with about ten feet of Gorilla® tape. It took a tank of gas without leaking a drop. The crazy thing was the pump won't keep running. It was embarassing standing there jamming the hose in the filler hole with all my strength, and having the nozzle shut off every two seconds. That's okay, but I still want the parts, so I'll be waiting for them. If they give you a tracking number send it to me in e-mail, okay my friend?

The parts are exactly what I wanted.

Try putting the filler in upside down, handle up. My 77 would only take gas like that without clicking the gas pump nozzle off. Took me quite a while to figure out that it would work with the nozzle flipped up.

Mine does it too, always just ran the pump as slow as I could, will have to try the upside down method next time.

It even comes down to the gas pump itself. The shape of the nozzle, how sensitive the top off sensor is calibrated. By flipping the nozzle upside down, the top off sensor is above the fuel flowmaking it less likely to trip.
For me, i cant bring myself to let go of the handle for fear of the nozzle falling out of the truck.
I'll put up with a sensitive gas pump as long it's at a newer gas station. New stations have cleaner tanks so it's less likely to pump dirt and water it to my truck. Avoid stations when you see the tanker truck there. When they off load fuel, they'll churn up any crap in the tank and the pump will pick it up. They have filters but water can get thru.

It usually works if you put it at half speed and turn the nozzle to one side or the other, but it usually comes down to the pump, so find a good one ! :)

Ah You Just Gotta Squeeze It Like A Man

But Finding A Good One To Squeeze Could Help The Battle.

I Wont Have This Problem....Seeing That I Will Be Going With A Fuel Cell Below The Rear Of My Bed W/ A Hole In My Poor Little Bed.

You never know, it still has to ground out to work isn't that it? My manhood was squeezing as hard as I could but the pump was at fault, according to Austin. I'll try a different pump, or maybe a different station.

In the news, I drove about 150 miles over the course of the three-day permit. Luv ran well except there's excessive oil consumption. It's not smoking too much and I never notice it unless I'm standing outside the Luv revving it up and down. I think I might have to do a ring job, as well as a timing cover gasket. Looks like I'm in for some fun. I'll be tapping the pistons out the top of the engine from the bottom without removing the crankshaft.

I think I must have forgotten to turn the timing chain tensioner 90° when I closed it up, too. A couple friends tell me it's making a noise when it idles, and it's not the valves.

Today I removed the valve cover to see if maybe I could stop the noise by a simple 90º turn of the adjusting screw, and I found it had disappeared! Oh well, I dropped the oil pan, and here it is from the very bottom:

I'll be doing the timing chain cover gasket job after all. I don't know if I'll do the rings, or if I'll replace any of the other timing parts.

I've got one with a chain tensioner that is like that. I never did fix it but it isn't a daily driver. Since you have a good excuse to pull the timing cover anyway, might as well get on with that project. Sometimes they just decide for you what you are going to be working on.

I got another photo for ya.

Image

I'll let you know how it goes...

Right now it's snowing and I took the tarp down and covered the LUV. I'm going to wait for a better day before I continue.

Today I'm pretty excited. I got a lot of work to do on the LUV, and it all has to be finished in a week. That's when I go for inspection!!!!!!!

I'm really glad the weather here has warmed up enough to melt enough snow to go ahead and put my tarp back up. It looks beautiful!

I got in the door and took some photos of the '72 sun visors...

Oh man. I got into the engine today. I was taking things apart, and when I got to the spark plug removal, I found that the #3 plug was badly sooted.

Remember I'm looking for the cause of oil consumption? Now I'm thinking of doing a piston ring job on just the one cylinder. Here's the plugs...

Image What do you guys think?

It could be rings, but a bad valve stem seal on #3 intake valve would be more common.
