What is your timing set at? I bought a LUV with a overheating problem and it turned out the timing was retarded, set timing to specs and it ran fine.

I have a timing light so I'll check it out tomorrow. If it wasn't in time, wouldn't it run horribly?

It depends on how retarded you are...

lol very true. I could probably be up there... as you can all see from my mostly retarded questions. ha

From reading all your symtoms here I believe you will find a clogged radiator. You have good heat from your heater correct? This means the water pump is circulating the water correctly so you can eliminate that. The top hose is hot but the bottom one is cold means that after the thermostat opens the water is not circulating through the radiator fast enough or at all.
Same thing going down the road at highway speeds. The engine is making more heat and the clogged radiator can't get rid of it fast enough.
On a normally working radiator the top hose should be hot and the the bottom one should also be quite hot but much less so. This means good circulation.

Probably is. The bottom hose only gets hot after either I squeeze it a few times, or if it's been running a while. I'm hoping that it's at least circulating a little bit, but when I pop the lid off the radiator, it isn't really moving much. :-(

I went out and checked the timing. The timing marks I can't see what they say, and can't remember if they even have anything on them (numbers, letters, symbols, anything) and it was directly in the middle of all of the timing marks. I turned the distributor and put it to the top, seemed like the engine ran worse, then moved it slightly below the middle mark and the idle seemed to increase. Took it for a test drive, and now the truck only gets 3/4 of the way hot. Before driving it or adjusting it anymore, I wanted to get someone to tell me where the timing mark should be because the haynes manual doesn't tell me. It just says it needs to be in spec.

Thanks!

it should say the degrees in 2's 0-2-6-8-etc so it should be the 8th bump on the timing cover... they are so small its easier to get a close look and see which you need before you fire it up and mark it.
also do you have the vacuum advance plugged while your setting the timing?

yeah I pulled it off the dist. and plugged it. I can't see it because my dear father painted it, and the paint is lifting. I'll get in there with some sand paper or a brillo pad and see if i can make it more legible. But if you say it should be the 8, it should be the 4th bump right? or does it have - and + from zero? I'm gonna go out there really quick before we leave and look again.

I went out there and put it on the 8th bump, right below 3/4 now. But barely. So I'm assuming that was part of my issue, now I'll just need to get the radiator fixed. Then I should be golden!

info i gave a while back that should help
you look at the front of the timing cover on the front of the engine. right behind the lower pulley is a set of numbers with marks for each one looks something like 8 6 2 0 2 6 8 with a dash for every number.. these are the degrees of timing advance. there is a notch on the back of the pulley. once the engine is assembled following the instructions provided EXACTLY as they are written in the book. once you have the engine running you use a timing light.. pointed at the area where the pulley is with the timing marks, it will flash (strobe) at the speed your plug is firing... the strobe will make the notch on the back of the pulley appear to be holding perfectly still... whatever number it is on is where your timing sits... if you loosen the distributor cap bolt VERY SLIGHTLY rotate the distributor cap while keeping an eye on the pulley notch position. you can adjust it to 6BTDC.

ok its the same as mine was my message above will tell you what you need to know the bigger bumps are the ones that are even #'s 8->0->8 and the smaller bumps are the odd #s between
each end is 8* with 0* in the center you want 6* btdc

So the 2nd notch from the top is where I need to be?

either 2nd from front or rear, pretty sure its the side to the right, but its been a good year or two now
if you look closely you can see the #'s above the marks. you may need to tune the carb slightly after setting the timing to make it just right

Thanks for the info man. You've saved me yet again.

Anyone know how many turns the mixture screw needs to be from fully closed? I've got it currently 1 1 /2 turns out.

It didn't get nearly as hot, even after driving it for a couple hours, but ran horribly. I'll adjust it to the 6btdc mark once I get home. I'm going to guess that it's the 2nd big notch from the bottom. I'm just guessing because I can't see the numbers, they're wore off and painted over. lol
