I think Ben has got the answer to your problem. Compression test. I know when im working on ANY engine, after a while of fiddling and tinkering and nothing is getting better i almost always resort to the compression test. Basically it can tell you what your engine is doing internally. Damn near everything, from piston rings to a stuck valve. Go buy your own compression tester if you don't already have one, they are fairly cheap. Forty or fifty bucks for a decent one.

i had almost the same problem with my luv, i swapped out my gas tank, disconnected my pump, clesned out the lines, bought a new filter, put in a different pump, and voila! it runs, now i just need to time it. but in order to take out the tank, i had to take of my bed. that was a bitch. but my relay wasnt working either so i just hardwired my pump, thus it works again.

Yah I just changed my head gasket and have not done a commpression test yet because my battery went dead trying to get it started and of course when it did start it did the same thing so. I have gotten a new alternator for it I should have just bought a voltage regulator when I got the alt. But thanks for the info guys

i would also say try and run a compression test. it should run good as long as each cylinder is within about 20 pounds of each other u might try squirting a little oil in the cylinders if they are low. my 81 luv had about 90 pounds per cylinder before i rebuilt it. i haven't checked it after. on my friends 80 model, the fuel pump would not work so we ran a wire from the ignition side of the fuse box. u could do this or even install a universal relay and hook one end to the battery and the other end to the fuse box and hook that up to your pump. 5 volts doesn't sound like enough to run that pump it should be around 12 or 13. if your worried about your tank, undue your fuel line at the pump and run a hose into a gas can and see if it will run like that.
