i wish i had gotten this list a month and a half ago. haha. maybe i would have a good running little trucl. its alright though i need something that can take the 340 miles one way trips every month to and from home back to post. but you have a really clean luv. is it a long bed? and it is actually the exact same color as mine.

Thanx. No, it's a short bed. Sorry I could not help you a month ago, I was dealing with the problem of it not running right and was doing it one thing at a time-Fuel, Spark and Compression. Could only work on it on weekends due to work and was searching the internet for answers, found most of them here on this site.

Here is my most recent problem. My truck left me on the side of the frwy. A free service takes you off the frwy on a hook out of harms way-

So I had plenty of light to see what was wrong. I had spark in my coil but not spark at spark plug. I grounded the MSD and I had spark at the plugs. I looked at my points which I just change and they look good. I had my wife turn the motor over and the points stayed open. OK, they must be loose. Points were not loose. Something strange, I put the rotor on and had my wife turn the engine over. Engine turn over but the rotor didn't. I took the distr out to see if the shaft broke. No shafts fine. Had the wife turn it over again and looked down the distr hole. The gears were going back and forth but not turning. Oil pump took a dump. Never saw the oil light, it just shut off. So I'm hoping it didn't take out any bearings. Been really cold out here and I was running thicker than normal oil for the weather conditions. Noticed my choke was still on and engine was still cold when I first broke down, even after @50 mile of driving. Called a for flat bed , waited a couple hours and then got towed 51 miles home.

Started my trip @4 pm and ended it at @midnight with catastrophic failure.

And now you've convinced me to put an analogue gauge in rather than the idiot light that's in it.

ethellkilledfred,
My guess is that when the distributer quit turning the engine died soon enough not to destroy any bearings. Here's my concern..did the timing chain break, the pin come out of the front of the cam shaft...something "not good" happened to allow your distributor stop turning, as you alreay know. My concern would be bent valves at this point. At least that's what I'm originally rolling around in my mind.

Thanks for the 411, Figuarus mention the same thing. The chain is still turning the cam. I have not yet pulled it apart to see what happen, but I'm assuming I broke the pin in the oil pump or worst I broke the drive gear. I had a lot of rust in the dist from sitting so I'm assuming the same might be true at the oil pump. Never had the oil light come on so I hoping for the best, if not V8 here it comes. My oil light was working properly

The manual I got with the truck had seen better days so I picked up a new Haynes 72-82 Chevy LUV Manual from Autobooks/Aerobooks http://www.autobooks-aerobooks.com/contact.php. I called and talked to Tina and she had a book ready for me to pick up. It's one of those stores, if they don't got it they will get it, and if they can't get it then it's out of print.

You should be ok as far as any other damage. The oil pump and distributor are dirven directly off of the crankshaft and have nothing to do with valve timing or chain. You probably broke a pin on the oil pump drive gear.

ok. so that totally blows your truck took a dump on you. but in other news arounds jays world (haha) i sold the love to my uncle for 1500, went to buy an s-10 then decided that i should start building my credit seeing as how im 19 and have absolutely none. lol. but i went to a couple different dealerships and found on that had some really nice cars and an even better gmc canyon a.k.a. chevy colorado. was totally gonna get it had all the paper work ready to go then they brought me the price and it was just barely outta my price range and was costing too much a month. so i hate to say i didnt get that truck, or any other truck for that matter. :-( i ended up buying a volvo c70. i know its not a chevy nor is it a truck but by all means it suits my needs perfectly. i travel nearly 400 miles one way a month and it is great on gas. and pretty quick. just thought i would let everyone know that i didnt buy a chevy truck. but ill continue checking in cuz ive learned alot from here and enjoy learning everything i can about vehicles.

Good luck with your Volvo. There's a Volve community out there also-
