In reading about all this stuff again, I was at the Kragen and I found STP 4 Cylinder oil treatment, and I looked up the MSDS for it and it said it contains 1-5% ZDDP, 1-5% Petroleum distillates and 60-100% mineral oil. (By contrast, STP Oil treatment lists 'proprietary' zinc compounds and a lot more petroleum distillates). I wonder if 1-5% content of ZDDP is significant. My usual opinion is that many of the products on your local auto parts shelves are simply gimmicky and there to make money. Nothing wrong with that because people buy them. But I wonder if there's any worth in this stuff. If I get a chance I'll try and do a calculation to figure out what concentration of ZDDP would be in 5 qts oil given a 1-5% by weight concentration from the manufacturer. Being such an inexpensive product I can't imagine it having as much as ZDDP plus.

OK, but only as long as no animals are hurt in the testing. :P
I'm laughing because you have all this knowledge and capability for this, and I'm the guy buying the crap off the shelf to see if it will "make my engine last forever".

 Well I have rabbits at home, but no they are not for testing. They are my friends.

Seat of the pants calculation, the bottle is 1/2 a quart so 1/2 a quart into 5 quarts total volume should give 0.1 to 0.5 weight percent ZDDP (0.5/5=1/10 so divide by 10). Not sure what that is in PPM, but from some of the reading I've done that could be adequate (e.g., some of the air cooled VW guys think so). This is for the red '4 cylinder' STP oil treatment mind you, not the blue bottle, I don't know what's the blue. Seems to be comparable to the old GM EOS. It's more economical to buy the ZDDP Plus additive because it's more concentrated, the racer guys would do that because they need more oil changes and more antiwear, but barring any good advice from people who know better I would say for my next oil change I'll do Valvoline (kudos Dr. Frankenstein) 10W-40 with a bottle of STP Red oil treatment and that should be good. And a Wix/Napa or Carquest oil filter (thanks others from another thread). Same for my flat tappet 350 motor in my GMC as well. Call me crazy but I have an aversion to ordering things off the internet if it's not necessary (ZDDP Plus only available on the internet) and since neither of my engines are extreme duty and I change the oil often enough, that should do it.

Whew. The OP may think twice before asking me a question again!

I think thats a very educated decision, and I agree that in a moderate engine - the serious ZDDP additive isnt really worth it. The old GM EOS is wonderful stuff, and has been great for many of my cars. Good Job. I think I will follow your lead, for my daily driver.
