I got my LUV running!!!! YaHoooo!!!!!! I had the distributor way off and that's all. Then another problem with the pin coming out of the camshaft. The thing was it slid into the timing sprocket. So I pulled out the camshaft and pounded the pin back in hard and put it all back together. Sweet!

It runs real smooth, the electric choke works, and the whole thing is real nice!! It's going to take me a while to upload the video, but I'll be back!!!

Back already, and here it is!!

Congrats. to you John. :bday:

I kept waiting for the camera to go dat dat dat dat dat dat dat dat dat on the fan!

Do you have a fan shroud for your truck?

And the "YAHOOO!!"... I do that every time I fire up a new eng. for the first time too! I think it's involuntary. :D

Also be advised, you will smell burning paint for quite a while to come. Don't be alarmed.

The paint has cured and is not burning. It is adhering. I was being careful with my digital camera. I didn't like the result though for a second I think you could see the timing mark.

The LUV runs fine. I'm very pleased with the results of the hard work. It has very good oil pressure, and starts perfect. The clutch responds well, and the carburetor seems to handle all the speeds well. I haven't had it over 50 mph yet; mostly around 40. Lots of accelerations and deccelerations. I ran the good filter in it, the Wix®, and today I bought another one in preparation for the oil change. I've only put about 40 miles on it.

I didn't get the inspection done because the officer said I had to have it brought in by a tow truck! Go figure. I have to find another route.

Later.

you have to have brought in by a tow truck. Where in the world does that come from. I've never had to tow a vehicle to an inspection center to get smogged. You should check into that. But then you don't want to piss off an inspector, do you?
Anyway, you got to drive it there and YOU MADE IT DUDE. very good job on what you've done.

Drive it back there and park around the corner. Then hire a tow truck to drag it in there.

Great idea LUVrv8. Or be there before they open in the am. and if they ask, tell them the tow truck gave you a discount for doing it very early.

Why can't you just get a trip permit to drive your truck to get it inspected???

I paid like 15-20 bucks for one just to drive my bus to tacoma to get it inspected last fall. I just went down to the local vehicle licensing place and told them I needed one to go to get it inspected, and they filled it out and told me where on the vehicle to display it. It was only good for the day of the inspection only, and I drove right over to the nearest vehicle licensing place after that and got my plates and tabs with no problems at all.

By the way...glad to hear another luv is revived and back with the living.

I got a three-day permit for $20 and a $4 agent's fee. Today is the last day of the permit. I spoke with the licensing agents who sent me to the VIN inspection and they are going to be on the phone first thing today and try to clear this up. This is a junked vehicle, with the last known registered owner not responding to any correspondence. According to the VIN inspector, I have no rights to the vehicle. I didn't get a chance to show him my junk vehicle verification, which was the substitute for a title. He was very rude and wouldn't let me speak and gave me a number to call and so I left.

Anyway, I am going to run all day today. I have to go fill up my gas can for the lawn mower for the whole summer, go to the food bank in Maple Valley, go pick up my wife from volunteering at a clothing bank in Des Moines, pick up some items from the store that we'd rather not cart on the bus, and find time to go show the truck to the good folks at the machine shop in Renton. Maybe I'll even go out to West Seattle or Queen Anne to get a photo of my LUV with the Space Needle in the background. I hope it's a nice day.

If I don't also go out to Parkland (Tacoma) today by reason of a second chance at getting this VIN inspection, then I will be able to get a trip permit for $4 that is for the inspection trip only. In the meantime, without tabs it is $24 for any three days if I want to go anywhere.

I told Lisa I was going to hold it to 45 mph, but darn if I didn't go 55!! The LUV runs SOOOO SMOOOOTH!!!! No vibration at all. Lots of power. It was 28 miles from my home to the inspection station, and I made the trip without a problem. We visited with friends yesterday evening, and came home in the dark, which is a whole new feeling we haven't done in more than two years.

Today I spoke with the local licensing agent about getting through the inspection process, and it is getting cleared up! I received a call from a state patrol official who questioned me about the LUV. I told him everything he asked about and he has cleared the way for me to go tomorrow!!!! I am going back in the morning, and this time, they are supposed to be waiting for me and ready to do the VIN inspection. I hope it all goes well. I have driven over 100 miles on the LUV so far, and it runs very well. I will take my wife with me, and we will no doubt enjoy the trip. The $4 trip fee is being waived by the license agency!!

I will change the oil after the trip. By then it should be about 200 miles done for the initial break-in period, and I will be replacing the filter too with another WIX® filter. I have a hose to change too, the one from the distributor to the carb is way too large, and therefore leaking vacuum. It doesn't seem to have very much vacuum though. I will also replace the hose on the top cover to the air filter. The old one is too limp and pinched at the bend.
