i pulled the luv into the shop last night at work to start working on her and noticed a couple things that needs fixed.

1st off, i was letting it run for awhile just for her to warm up, i don't know if she was getting warm or not since my temp gauge doesn't work. i'd say running maybe 10 minutes and out of nowhere she just dies. no sputter, just dies. once she died i could hear bubbles fizzleling from between the head and block from the front of the block.
i've been suspicious of the head gasket being blown AGAIN :x but would a blown head make it die suddenly like that ?
it looks like i'll be needing a new head and radiator before she's back on the road.

second question is, do you guys know of any kind of good body filler (not bondo). i have tiny dents down the side of my bed that i need to get out. tonight i'm going to hammer them out as good as i can but i still want to run a thin filler over the holes so it's perfect.

thanks for all you help guys.

since i just got back from vacation i'm really getting down on the luv. i actually plan on painting here within the next month.
no one steal my color  GUNMETAL
will defently be back on the road in the next 2 months 8) :drinking: :onfire: man i can't wait till i'm drivin the luv again. 1 year is way too long

If the head bolts are torqued and it sputters between the head and block, then the head may be warped. The head can be milled down if the warp isn't too bad. See if you have an oil leak running down the block from the head behind the carb. This would be the indicator.

Would a warped head cause it to run or idle rough and then die, because I am having the same problem as bcg, I changed the head gasket and when I changed it I used copper gasket spray sealant and someone told me that you are not suppose to use any kind of sealant on the head gasket, is this true and are you suppose to use anything on the head bolts and what would it cost to get the head milled. Thanks

It could. The aluminum head tends to warp becuz the head bolts loosen over time. That's why you half to retorque them periodacally. If you don't then the head tends to bow up in the center. That's why an oil leak down the down the block from the head right behind the carb is a tell tale indication. The head gasket could then leak during an intake down stroke when the intake valve is open. Instead of sucking the gas/air mixture in from the intake manifold, extra air is being sucked in thru the leak in the head gasket. This leans out the mixture, so the engine runs poorly. Enuf of a leak and it'll run down right shitty. I found out the hard way a few years ago. The head on my LUV warped and had to be milled down.

i would suggest a warped head, especialy to shane since he didn't have the head machined . as for bcg, you might want to check the gasket for the intake manifold also, coolant runs through a passage in it and when the motor warms up you might be leaking a little coolant to the intake ports and steam would kill an idle as quick as carb spray.

i'm gonna use that evercoat for it and the primer 1k build on my luv. its for the dents when i rolled my luv a while back on driver side only other than the door caving bought a door for 20 bucks with glass and everything, so now just minor dents to repair man my luv takes a beating too  anyways

the primer comes in a rattle can its not cheap either
i dont know how much both of them cost though when tryin to do nice work you usually get what you pay for i personally would talk to a paint supplier

The intake manifold is where I use sealant on both sides of the gasket, since both it and the head are aluminum and expand and contract the same. On the head gasket I put a little trace around the center oil port on both sides of the gasket. Just for insurance. Haven't had any problems.

that's a little too far away to tell if it's antifreeze, you could undo the manifold nuts and check the intake passages for rust and or coolant.

does it acualy get a chance to warm up before it quits idiling?
also for the record; if a machine shop want's to charge more than $100 to surface a head on a four cyl tell them you could just take it somewhere else.

when you get the head done, check the mating surface on the block, the don't tend to warp but if the head's been bad long enough there will be a little burn out in between cyls. if there is get a good strait edge and a .004 feeler gauge, if you can slip it under the strait edge you should get the block ground down too. this could save time and headaches later. if not just polish the top of the block well.

if there's more than .10 taken off between the two of em i would recomend a thicker head gasket to restore propper compression (unless you can afford 92 octane)

my cousin had a 69 ford with a 390 in it and iy blew a head gasket between 2 cylinders and he kept driving it, and it cut a groove in the head and the block. it was a deep groove and it ruined the block and the head.
