What are you guys using? I haven't seen a PF 1177 in years. Wal-Mart discontinued the ST 3950 over a year ago. I have been using the Purolator 10193, but I recently cut one open and it had much less filter media than they used to. If i wanted a big, empty can, I would buy a Fram. The ST 3953A Wal-mart is suggesting now looks like a little piece of junk.

Being how LUVRV8 was asking, I would assume he is talking SBC. Not the stock motor.

Cutting one open to see the quantity of filter elements can be misleading. As technology advances, the filter capabilities of various products can go up which allows them to reduce the AMOUNT of filtering element. But I like the Wix filters too and never had any problems. Had two fram filters blow apart which is why I quit using them.

Well I needed to get the oil changed. I went to Oriely's and their Microguard seemed my best choice. It may be Botched up too.

Yeah, any fool with a hack saw and a tape measure can tell how much media a filter has, but any other good information is hard to to find. Considering my truck and many other others do fine on Fram filters, I can't see putting the money into a WIX. It is just that it is no longer as easy to find filters better and cheaper than the Fram. Other than you pay a name brand price for what looks terrible inside, I know of little reason not to run Fram.

I have used Fram on and off forever.
Many years ago it was the Filter to use. But the last 3 or 4 years I have heard a lot of bad about them. What happened? Was it when Allied Signal took over?

Even 20 year old Frams seem to have the same poor construction. I conclude the lack of filter problems from their widespread use means oil filters aren't very important.

LABman spends endless hours on dog forums. I compare those that cut up oil filters and judge them by the insides to the people that judge dog foods by the ingredient lists on dog food bags. They then condemn common brands that in fact have a very successful track record. Of course you can never tell who is hyping something they sell.

Many, many, many, many years ago. When I got my LUV back in 1982, my dad showed me how to change my oil, Fram filters and Penzoil is what he used, figured my dad knew everything back then. Well 2 years later moved to Denver out in the real world, got a job at a gas station and quickly found out those were very bad choices!!! I lost my 2nd LUV because of Penzoil. So its only GM filters and Valvoline for me now.

Below is one link of many I know of that will let you know why NOT to use a Fram. I have experienced it also...

Sometime in the late 80's I did use Quaker State for a few year, but other than that, I haven't used anything but Pennzoil.

That Fram link required registering to view. i skipped it.

Sorry about that link. My own experience was this. I changed the oil and filter (do this after a certain number of passes), and went from 80 psi cold to 20 psi. Removed the Fram, the one with the suregrip on it, and it went back to normal. Around this time, there were threads popping up on boards all over with the same thing, if they didn't have/check the gauges, the odds were they would wipe the bearings. I run Carquest or Napa filters, they are made by Wix...

If they still make the SO 3950, I likely will try one next oil change.

BTW, on another forum I hear some Wal-Marts still have the ST 3950 on clearance for a buck. I checked some when traveling last week, but no luck. I think that is dirt cheap for a average filter. The more I learn, the less important I think an oil filter is.

Back in 1997 my friend's Auto Shop teacher in Colorado had the class run all kinds of tests on the different oil filters available. FRAM was the worst, and CarQuest was the best. In California at the time, the only way to get a CarQuest filter was buy a NAPA brand one. So I have used their NASCAR Select Series ever since. Also, if you want to buy Valvoline, which according to most old-school air-cooledVW mechanics is the best for high heat engines like 4Cyl., you can buy the NAPA brand oil. It is the same exact oil made at the same exact plant. I save $2-$3 per quart depending on sales prices. I don't even watch the mileage. I change my oil as soon as its not clear anymore. I lost one engine to poor oil maintanence, and vowed to the CarGods I would never let an innoccent engine die again.

I would be interested in more info on the tests. There seems to be more strong opinions on oil filters and oil than facts.

I once cut open a Fram and never bought another since. However bad they look inside, an amazing number of engines seem to do fine on them.
