After I pull the motor and get ready to reinstall the rebuilt one is it easier to do it with the trans on or off, can it all go in as one peace?

i have never pulled/ installed a LUV motor whith out the trans on it. Reson being the tranny crossmember dosnt come off the frame so i dont even think its possible to do the trans seperate.

Someone posted here about that a few months ago. As I recall, 2wd drive is hard but can be done. 4wd is next to impossible, becuz of the transfer case hanging on the side.

Pull em both as a unit, getting that trans and motor lined up to go back together in the truck is a huge pain. Its much easier to get the motor and trans back together out of the truck. Getting the trans back up over the crossmember with it hooked to the motor is a bit of a challenge, but it beats lining the input shaft up up with the clutch from under the truck.

Also, be prepared for the trans to puke out a bunch of fluid out the tailshaft, even if you have drained it. If you have a spare yoke you can stick it in there it will keep it from leaking.

Cool thanks, that’s what I was thinking but wasn’t sure. I can do about everything but motor work

I'm going to have to disagree. I pulled my block, trans, and transfer case at the same time and it was Very easy.

I just pulled out eng and trans together on Fri. night. Out of my 80. It was hard , had to have A LOT of angle on it. Removed the radiator, that's about it. Oh and the shifter.(forgot that at first. could figure out why we couldn't pull the eng. forward?) :?

I was elaborating on what MEPR posted. Should've explained myself better. Yeah, what were you drinking last night. You weren't your usual self. Today's the day to celebrate with little nip, that is if the SeaHawks get a win.

I was in a bit of a hurry, and I cut a bunch out of that post right before I hit submit. I was going to say a lot about how I still believe that you can pull a 4WD tranny without pulling the motor, and one of these days I'm going to have to prove it. If you have a body lift it is possible though, even a 2 inch gives you enough room to wiggle the tranny loose. That I have done.

when we pulled the motors out of both lees trucks and codys truck, they had to come out at a very steep angle to clear the core support and the trans tunnel. codys was kinda tricky though, cuz his was a 4x4 once upon a time.

when i pulled mine, i unbolted the tranny, yanked the motor out and then slid the tranny forward and out. when i put it back in i did just the reverse... little extra wrenching to split them, but made it easier overall for me...

I never even question motor R&R in LUV's anymore, I always pull motor with tranny. If you want to save time it will save you many hours if you bolt the motor, trans, cooler lines, converter, and everything before you drop it in. The same goes for manual tranny models as well.

LUV's came with a set of "ears" from the factory, those work good. Otherwise just wrap the chain around the smog pump bracket, and use a bolt in the intake, just make sure it's solid so you dont drop it on your toe!
