I need to change the pan gasket on my luv. It has a v8 and i dont really want to pull the motor out if i dont have to. If i pull the cross member that is under the pan will it hurt anything or will i be ok.

Thank You

It shouldn't be a problem at all. I've made the mistake of driving my truck with the cross member completely out. I could feel the flex and promptly returned to install the part. It went back in without tweaking anything. Yes, It makes oil pan work a breeze!

I've pulled mine out before and had no problems as well.

I had a parts truck for a while that someone had lowered, then removed the front crossmember from and then "tweaked" the frame to get it even lower. That thing would not go back in for anything. My suggestion is if you take it out, do it with the frame supported and do not let the front wheels take much weight. Once that frame gets out of whack, that crossmember will be a huge pain to get back in.

not trying to contradict supporting the rest of the truck, BUT, mine comes out with ease and goes right back in fine. I pulled it out with the motor in and out, and never had to force it- with or without the extra motor weight.

the front of these trucks were built to be strong little haulers. they are pretty rigid. youll be fine.

(now heres a parent speaking)- "of course its always a good idea to support the rest of the truck when working on it son"

I guess as long as the frame doesn't get tweaked it would go in and out very easy. In the case of the one I had, someone had intentionally bent the frame and I never did get the crossmember to line up again. I bet whatever is left of that truck still doesn't have a front crossmember.

I guess my point is not that it is likely to be a problem, but that once the frame gets out of whack you may never see that crossmember back in place again. From the sounds of everyone's experiences here it should go just fine, but I thought I'd share a little story of what could happen if it didn't.
