Any advice on what is wrong?

The #2 is not firing all the time. almost never. I have a tool that checks spark out of the distributor. I swapped the cap and rotor, (other used ones) and still have the same thing. the 1,3,and 4 are working it's just the #2. This is checked right out of the cap, so could it be a bad distributor?

All my tools and books are packed up right now while the garage gets redone, so that sucks when I need them.

I swapped out the distributor with an old one I had , eyeballed the points gap, I was able to time it (I had my light handy), and it runs much better now. Later I can do it all correctly. It still kicks every now and then but I think that is another problem.

Ron, could be the dist. The only thing that comes to mind is the cam for the points has something wrong with it.

You say it still kicks every now and then, do you think it is still the #3?

I don't really know now. I drove it around last night and it ran good. just pinging a lot. I probably need to do some fine tuning though.

DON'T RUN IT WITH PING. Luv engines will break top compression rings very quickly. I have one sitting on workbench now. distributer got loose and advanced. every top ring is broken in 2 or more pieces. Sounds like you had a bad cap to start with. checking spark at cap won't always tell you anything. Change that #2 plug. It may be bad just from misfire.
