Post subject: Forget the intake valve!
PostPosted: Fri Feb 07, 2003 8:06 am
I have found out that im going to need more than a intake valve! i put the head all back together, and this thing still smokes really bad. this might really sound dumb to all you engine guru.s..can i take the pistons out without removeing the engine? The truck is a 80 luv 4x4. any advice would be a great help! Maybe i should just get another engine. I dont need anything perfect , as this truck is strictly an off road only. thanks.. :x

Did you perform a compression check? This can give you a good idea of what to zero in on. Your problem may be only in one specific cylinder. It would be easier to deal with. Im not too familiar with 4x4s but i think you can drop the pan to remove any pistons. Did the valves close? Is there exessive crankcase presure pumping backwards into the air cleaner? Are all of the cylinders firing?

Take it from me, TAKE THE ENGINE OUT TO WORK ON IT! It is almost impossible to get the oil pan off a 4X4 with the engine in the truck. What color is the smoke? If it is white and smells sweet you are getting water into the cylinders. I agree, do a compression check. To find if it is the rings squirt some 80-90 gear oil into the sparkplug hole and retest. If the compression increases, the rings are worn, if not it is the valves. You will need atleast 75 lbs of compression for the engine to run. Good luck!

dang it rick, where you been. Your one little tip there makes me think you know your stuff. I was going to do a compression check a while ago when trouble shooting some smoke, and had not a clue. that totally makes sense!

I will definately file that tidbit into the 77ssluv greymatter. keep em comin!

I did a compresion test and all but one read around 75. There was only one that didnt read the same, it is the one closest to the fire wall, and it read 125+. the smoke is white and you cant hardly see through it.It is so strong it well choke you. I got a whole set of valves and im going to replace all of them. What i did before was just use the lapadary valve grinding greese, one valve had a little flat side to it. i put them all back in and then filled it with gas while i had the head off to see if i had any leaks. that one did leak alittle, but would that cause it to still smoke that bad? Im going to remove the head again no matter what and replace them all. The cylinders all looked good. From what i have heard ,you really cant tell anything from the top. If i pull the motor and the pistons would i have to get it board out because of the taper in the cylinders? THANKYOU for all your advice and help everybody!

It sounds like you have either a cracked head or blown head gasket. If the engine has EVER been overheated you will need to get another head. It maybe warped form the heat. Over the years luv owners had trouble with blown head gaskets around the 50,000 mile mark. This might be your problem. If you have antifreeze in the water the smoke will smell sweet. As far as boring the block, it depends on the taper of the cylinder and diameter. If the wear isn't too far out of spec you might get away with just honing and/or deglazing the bore and add new rings.Check with an engine machine shop for the specs, they can be your best resourse. You can have the head checked magnafluxed, that should find any cracks.Hope this helps.
