Has anybody done an oil pan job on these engines? I am in the process of swapping a 1978 2wd 1.8 into my 1980 4wd and I had to swap the oil pans to get the new engine to clear the front diff.

The replacement oil pan gasket is rubber and I was wondering if you are supposed to use any glue or sealant with this gasket? Will it leak if I don't use glue or some type of sealant?

The second question I have relates to the torque setting of the oil pan bolts and nuts. How tight should these be? My book didn't really give a torque setting for them and the torque wrench doesn't really work because the rubber gasket just squishes. Any recommendation on how to tighten these so that the gasket won't leak?

i just did the oil pan on mine too..... you need to apply a thin layer of black or grey silicone (not blue) to each corner of the bottom of the block and torque the pan till its snug do not do much more than a good squeeze on the gasket or it'll blow out the sides and pour oil. all i used was my dewalt cordless drill and set the clutch to max then added another 1/4 turn.
