Butchered wiring doesn't sound like fun. You might want to take out the tail light assemblies and unplug from the wiring harness and check the connectors for dirt and corrosion. When I was repairing my reverse lights I had a hard time with the wiring harness and there was some mud caked in them a bit and the pins on the connectors were slightly corroded. When I plugged them back it things were messing up some, but after plugging and unplugging them 5 or 10 times and blowing all the dirt out of them, I got them to work fine. Make sure they are connected in all the way and tight too. Electrical connections have to be clean and tight. Good luck and hope you get your problem fixed.
