got so far as trying to remove the timing chain sproket, and the automatic tensioner wont let up. the book says to push in the screw and turn it to release it, but it wont push in. ive done this like 3 times already and this is the first problem its given me... is there some little trick im missing this time? :?

also, what it the point in removing the dist. when removing the head? it doesnt appear to be connected to it at all... :x

On the dist, you can leave it right where it sits, no point in taking it out for a head removal unless it gets in your way.

The sprocket, first I wire the chain to the top sprocket so it stays in the right place. You then pull the sprocket off the cam, and you can pull the head leaving the sprocket in place. The tensioner is usually pretty easy in my experience. The plastic screw head deal can break or the tab on it can break off though. Maybe the tab is not there, or something isn't quite right. It should push in if you have it turned to the right spot, then you can lock down. It really never seemed to make much difference that I could see. Just wire down the chain to the cam sprocket and go for it if you can't get the tensioner quite right. As long as you can get the sprocket on and off, having the tensioner tight just reassures you that the bottom sprocket won't slip on the chain. ;)

When I removed the head on my 80 LUV, I marked the the link on the chain and the tooth on the sprocket with typewriter white out. Then I removed the sprocket and chain, separated them, and wired the chain tight to the battery holder so it couldn't slip on the lower spocket. I left both manifolds on to use as handles when lifting the head off the block. Whiteout is also good for marking the index mark for timing. shows up real good even in bright light under a timing light.

Well i just got done yanking the head off of mine, everything came off pretty easy, come to find out the gasket was bad, blown between the #3 and 4 cylinders, sent it off to be testested and milled, hope to have it all back togather and fire it up tommorow.
