Post subject: 2 questions from me!

Ok, well first off, my friend got a job at a transmission place, and there is a whining noise when I'm going at high speeds. So he put it on the lift for me, to see if there are any leaks, and check my fluid levels. There were leeaks at both sides of the drive shaft, and he started to jiggle it. He could jiggle the drive shaft about a quarter of an inch. He said I needed new U joints. I was wondering how hard it was to replace them, and how much it might cost to buy the U joints.

My next question is, how do you "alter the speedometer driven gear ratio"? That's what it says to do if you have other than stock tires on, to get the speedometer reading speed correctly. But it doesn't say how to do it, or where it is. Oh, this is in my shop manual by the way.
Thanks

Jaret

U joints are usually a snap to put in. Real cheap too (like 10 bucks or so)

You'll probably need a good bench vise, some needle nose pliers, a large socket or two, and a hammer.

Take the 4 little spring clip things out of the corners of the ujoint. What I've always had to do is clamp it, put the socket over one of the corners, and beat the sh*t out of it with a hammer. But I always wait too late for it to come out easy.

It's pretty self explanatory once you get started, if you get stuck, let us know and we'll walk you though it.

I should be getting my U joints this weekend, so we'll see how it goes.

I got my new U joints put in. It was so frustrating. It took almost 5 hours. The hard part was getting those damn things out. I had to take a torch to them, us penetrating fluid, and wack like hell with a hammer. That has been THE hardest thing to do on my truck so far. I think it was so hard because those were the stock U joints, and my truck has 260,000 miles on it. I'm very glad I'm done, and it worked. Anyways, I'm probably going to get my rotors turned, because my front disc brakes sqeal like hell, almost makes windows break. :D And it's kinda embarassing going down the road, and having pedestrians 100 feet ahead of you looking back to see what that loud sqeaking is. But hey, at least they have something cool to look at.

yeah they can be a pain to change out. The best way is a socket and vice, just for future referance. 8)

MEPR, You ready to move out of FLA yet?

But I had to take a cutting torch and cut two of the legs off, then press them out with a vice when I replaced them on my 76, 80 & 81.
