How do I test and check a smog pump? How much air should be coming out of it? It's still on the truck but I don't think it's working right and want to diagnose it. I mean, is it just barely a little air coming out or is it like as much as a tail pipe at idle? :? :?: Ron

Its not a great deal of air, not like the amount moving out the pipe at idle. One side should have a suction and the other will be blowing out some. I'll try to remember to bring home my factory shop manual tomorrow and give you the procedure it lists for testing the pump as I recall it was pretty clear. In my experience though, the thing that "goes" on the pump is the bearings. Both of the ones I've had fail still worked they just sounded like a sort of constant fingernails on chalkboard noise.

short version of the procedure goes like this...
remove pump
turn pulley clockwise 3/4
turn back 1/4
if the bearings don't feel smooth or they hang up, disassemble the pump. Inspect everthing, replace whatever needs to be replaced.

if your pump is bad and it's not the bearings you're probably going to have to find another pump.
